When I try to open the installer, it can't find the default program to open the jar program with. Does anyone know the correct program to use to open the .jar? I tried using all of the different java files in my /ProgramFiles/Java folder.

It should open automatically with javaw or java. If neither of these work, re-install Java and try to run the installer again.

Try running it with java.exe, in the bin folder of where it's installed. If that doesn't work, uninstall and then reinstall java.
hello! I have optifine A4, TMI, Liteloader, and VoxelMap installed. I want to update JUST the optifine, but your installer cannot be aimed at any one jar, but it makes a new jar on its own. It would be great if I could update my jar without having to go through the process of replacing every mod in my jar, just for an optifine update. Is there any download links for a manual copy-paste type old-school rewrite using a .zip or .jar file w/out the installer?

You can still do that; just extract the contents of the Optifine jar and put them in the Minecraft jar, then delete META-INF, as described here; I use this method myself for similar reasons without problems.
Note that some mods may have to be installed in a particular order although this should only matter if they share the same class as only one mod can modify it at a time (the first page of this thread also shows installation instructions for the method described above ("complex" installation method) and says Optifine should be installed last but I've updated my own mods without problems, just overwriting the old classes in the previously modified jar, unless I made some significant change).

ive taken a look into that jar, and it has launcher items mixed with the mod itself, there is no way id be able to just drag the extracted contents into my jar, thats why i was asking for a file with just the mod WITHOUT any launcher.
I am using OpyiFine HD U A5, without any other mods, I did not have this issue with vanilla Minecraft, I break a block, and it acts like I never broke it a split second after the block breaks, if I managed to pick up the block, it is gone from my inventory.

Regardless, it does work because those classes have no effect on the operation of the game; you could throw any random file into the Minecraft jar and it would have no effect whatsoever on the game as long as it didn't have the same name as an existing class, thus overwriting it. Believe me, I've always installed Optifine by extracting the Optifine jar (or zip when it was a zip) and placing all of the contents into the Minecraft jar (or version.jar), then deleting META-INF.
The first page of this thread even says you can do that (replace 1.6.2 with any version since then):
C. Complex
- Use the official launcher to download and start once Minecraft 1.6.2.
- Go to the minecraft base folder (the official launchers shows it when you click "Edit Profile" as "Game Directory")
- Go in subfolder "Versions"
- Rename the folder "1.6.2" to "1.6.2_OptiFine"
- Go in the subfolder "1.6.2_OptiFine"
- Rename "1.6.2.jar" to "1.6.2_OptiFine.jar"
- Rename "1.6.2.json" to "1.6.2_OptiFine.json"
- Open the file "1.6.2_OptiFine.json" with a text editor and replace "id":"1.6.2" with "id":"1.6.2_OptiFine" and save the file - Copy the files from the OptiFine ZIP file in "1.6.2_OptiFine.jar" as usual (you can use the 1.5.2 instructions for this) and remove the META-INF folder from "1.6.2_OptiFine.jar".
- Start the official launcher
- Click "Edit Profile"
- Select "Use version:" -> "release 1.6.2_OptiFine"
- Click "Save Profile"
- Click "Play" or "Login" to start the game. If only "Play Offline" is available, then log out and log in again to fix it.
That is, assuming you actually downloaded Optifine from the links in this thread and not as some launcher(?)
Does anybody know how to disable "Threaded Optimization" / "OpenGL Threading" for AMD videocard?
Look in your Catalyst for "Multi-threaded optimization". If you're changing this because you read that Nvidia has the issue, you don't need to change it. Only Nvidia cards glitch when multi-threaded is on.

How to create resource pack with connected textures for Optifine 1.8?
In Invictus resoursepack:
First image: connected textures OFF
Second image: connected textures FAST and FANCY.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Are you using the newest version for 1.8? Because you need to add it as a jar mod, not a loader mod. Hope this helps.

How do i do that?
Here is a guide to making connected textures at least for MCPatcher. I think it should work for optifine too, because i used a guide from MCPatcher to create more textures for mobs and was the exact same process. Here is the link: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/resource-packs/resource-pack-discussion/1256361-ctm-a-guide

You have the guts to do something no one else can...
