I just restarted playing after a 3 year hiatus.
i can't find a zip to install into the forge profile with magic.
It says this when i put it in the mods folder

I didn't think that applied to mods. They aren't Mojang's.
The EULA clearly states (see under ownership) that you cannot make any money from mods, which do use Mojang's code, especially mods like Optifine (edited Minecraft code, these mods can be directly added to the jar, unlike Forge mods which only interface with Forge, though even some of those may have Mojang's code in them):
Any tools you write for the Game from scratch belong to you. Modifications to the Game ("Mods") (including pre-run Mods and in-memory Mods) and plugins for the Game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, as long as you don‘t sell them for money / try to make money from them. We have the final say on what constitutes a tool/mod/plugin and what doesn‘t.
However, they only mention selling mods for money, not making money while using the mod, so that seems to be okay.
Also, this part makes no sense, considering that Optifine is mostly Mojang's code and Mojang has more authority over whether you can edit the code (they don't support modding but clearly don't forbid it based on the aforementioned passage in the EULA):
It may be not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use as long as it remains in its unaltered, unedited form
I actually edited Optifine myself to change a bit of code, but as long as I don't distribute it I don't see that being any problem (less than my distributing of some of Forge's code in some of my mods available for download on this forum, as part of bugfixes and performance improvements, some of which I also took off of the bug tracker where others posted the fixes. This is also not the first time I edited somebody else's mod, and even admitted that I did so to the creator, who didn't really care as it was only for personal use, later I made my own mod based off of it, using "original" code, actually copy+pasted+modified Mojang code).
The EULA is talking to mod developers who cannot profit from making mods for Minecraft. It is not illegal to make money playing Minecraft and therefore by extension, form using any mods running on Minecraft. Even if the mod developper says otherwise. The mojang EULA supercedes that: mod developers have no rights to their own mods.
It is simply good manners to ask for permission but not at all a legal requirement.
Even if the mod developper says otherwise. The mojang EULA supercedes that: mod developers have no rights to their own mods.
Not so.
"Any tools you write for the Game from scratch belong to you. . Sounds like the mod authors own their works unless Mojang chooses to incorporate it into Minecraft. At this point it'll be subject to Mojang giving others permission to modify/use.
Hey guys, let's not turn this into a mod license war arguing over semantics in a vaguely written EULA. The answer has already been given in a thread devoted to that flame war. No, you cannot attempt to monetize a youtube let's play series with this in it. Given the donation system is a valid and common loophole used in many fields. They are not paying for the video, merely thanking a fellow user for their time and effort.

He's not rude... just tired of repeating the same answer over and over! It seems people are too busy or too lazy to research any question.
I'm 99.9% certain the problem you are having is yours!
I run Forge (1450, I'll NEVER understand why people line up to be Forge Guinea pigs) and the latest release of the 1.8 Optifine version. Yes Virginia, the versions (MC and all Mods) must match! On page 1, post 1, of this thread is a link (here - look for it!!!) for other than 1.8.7 versions of Optifine.
Lou
Take baby steps... Make certain MC 1.8 works BEFORE adding Forge. Once it works add and test Forge... if that works add a Mod and test that too! Successful?, next Mod and TEST.
Read page 1, post 1, of EVERY Mod you want to add. A quick scan of the last few pages is also a good idea. If the last 12 that tried to use the Mod couldn't odds are not in your favor. Thinking about you're trying to do, also helps!
Not everyone who comes here hasn't researched the question.
For the record... the vast majority of people asking a question, don't read the one above their own post.
You done good! If you need more help PM me. I'll gladly do what I can.
Lou
This offer only applies if you're using a PC and some version of Windows! Mac users almost never help other Mac users. it's also rarer than hen's teeth when they tell us they're on a Mac.
You're probably right. Some people never cease to amaze me...
Thanks for the offer. It seems reinstalling did the trick, which is odd since the only thing I did between playing my 1.7.10 build and this one was create a new profile and install Forge to it. When I tested it, it worked fine. So *shrug*. I guess that's just another thing to add to the list - "when all else fails, try reinstalling."
Thanks, all. Hopefully this helps someone else.
The options.txt / optionsof.txt / optionsshaders.txt are highly incompatible from 1.6 & 1.7 going to 1.8.
Unless you specified 1.8 to run in a new 'game directory' all by itself, those files needed to be deleted. You get some crazy weird stuff. Probably because a lot of the functions in OF don't exist anymore because they are built into MC now, I dunno.
Of course, running an OF Version for 1.8.7 on MC 1.8.0 w/ Forge is going to be a troublesome problem as well. As for Forge versions, they don't matter. If you read the changelogs you can see what fixed, so if you need those patches, than you will have to use those versions (for example D3 - D5 support newer versions of Forge 1469+).
In general always the best idea to run the latest version, unless you need to hold back because of another mod (as grimallq said). For example, with ShadersMod you need to run OF 1.8.0 HD U D2 still (which means you also need to use Forge 1450 or 1468 at the latest), even though the new ShadersMod support Forge 1469+ as well. Karyonix hasn't had the time to repair compatibility with the massive texture changes in OF 1.8.0 HD U D3.
It seems reinstalling did the trick, which is odd since the only thing I did between playing my 1.7.10 build and this one was create a new profile and install Forge to it.
I have actually been waiting to see this. This has happened to my son twice now and I haven't been able to figure out what he had done. He has a 1.7.10 and a 1.8 in different save locations. When he updated the 1.8 Forge it broke the 1.7.10. It hasn't happened to me personally but at least I know that it does happen in some weird instances.
Help, please.
I can't figure out how to get this to work with forge.
I just restarted playing after a 3 year hiatus.
i can't find a zip to install into the forge profile with magic.
It says this when i put it in the mods folder

??? Plz help me.
May I monetise a Let's Play video with Optifine in?
Then explain the thousands of videos out there that do have Optifine including Roosterteeth, Rendog and more?
I didn't think that applied to mods. They aren't Mojang's.
The EULA clearly states (see under ownership) that you cannot make any money from mods, which do use Mojang's code, especially mods like Optifine (edited Minecraft code, these mods can be directly added to the jar, unlike Forge mods which only interface with Forge, though even some of those may have Mojang's code in them):
However, they only mention selling mods for money, not making money while using the mod, so that seems to be okay.
Also, this part makes no sense, considering that Optifine is mostly Mojang's code and Mojang has more authority over whether you can edit the code (they don't support modding but clearly don't forbid it based on the aforementioned passage in the EULA):
I actually edited Optifine myself to change a bit of code, but as long as I don't distribute it I don't see that being any problem (less than my distributing of some of Forge's code in some of my mods available for download on this forum, as part of bugfixes and performance improvements, some of which I also took off of the bug tracker where others posted the fixes. This is also not the first time I edited somebody else's mod, and even admitted that I did so to the creator, who didn't really care as it was only for personal use, later I made my own mod based off of it, using "original" code, actually copy+pasted+modified Mojang code).
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
-Self-deleted post-
I just tried to download it for 1.8.7... doesn't work.
Whenever I download it and click the play button, nothing happens?
I am trying to use 1.8.7, and I have no mods on.
Not so.
"Any tools you write for the Game from scratch belong to you. . Modifications to the Game ("Mods") (including pre-run Mods and in-memory Mods) and plugins for the Game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, as long as you don‘t sell them for money / try to make money from them. We have the final say on what constitutes a tool/mod/plugin and what doesn‘t."
I don't cheat; I just conveniently write the rules.
Oops, did I steal your mod? Well, I'm lazy, so if I found the motivation to do so, you did something wrong as a developer.

I have sparked a silly argument. I'm just going to contact sp614x directly.
Good plan.

I've used OptiFine before, and it is truly an amazing mod. But it's hard to get it to work with forge. Make a forge version possibly?
Been playing since 1.2_02!
I have the Same Problems with Optifine and Chisel. Using Recommended Forge Version and 2.4.0.38 from Chisel.
Also have Fastcraft on the Client but it worked some time ago.. Maybe there is a Problem between Optfine and AMD?
I'm 99.9% certain the problem you are having is yours!
I run Forge (1450, I'll NEVER understand why people line up to be Forge Guinea pigs) and the latest release of the 1.8 Optifine version. Yes Virginia, the versions (MC and all Mods) must match! On page 1, post 1, of this thread is a link (here - look for it!!!) for other than 1.8.7 versions of Optifine.

For the record... the vast majority of people asking a question, don't read the one above their own post.
You done good! If you need more help PM me. I'll gladly do what I can.

This offer only applies if you're using a PC and some version of Windows! Mac users almost never help other Mac users. it's also rarer than hen's teeth when they tell us they're on a Mac.

About Chisel2 + Optifine. B7 works fine, B8 and C1 have some weird transparency issues... Happens on AMD and NvidiaIgnore it.
