"As time has continued, people and the cities they live in have been dwindling. Giants are extinct, horses have all but vanished, a whole civilization has disappeared under a lake and I hale as the last of my kind. Kind of what? No one bothered to tell me.
To make matters worse more and more of the cave system is becoming less habitable as history progresses, and its looking like the once mighty kingdom of Tres is even feeling less than home as the walls around it have gradually gave way. Its as if the cavern itself is alive and wants us all out, but I still stand . . . at the grave of my brother.
After his horrific death I couldn’t had a lower point in my life. Its as if fate was killing my family off one by one and I am next. A mysteries tall man in black, approached me after the funeral. He was curiously reluctant to look me in the eyes at first and gave me a message.
He said I was a human, a race whom has been gone since before recorded history. I knew me and my brother were different, but its a lot to take in. As if the dense fog could not thicken, it did. I asked him 'Why should I believe you!?' His head jerked up and locked eyes with mine. They glowed purple. The freak gave me an ominous smile. I was too frightened to move.
He made a quiet chuckle. 'Heh heh. You see, your the last one, but you don’t need me to tell you that, but I do need to tell you that everyone’s; you, your friends, their friends, the poor and the filthy rich days are numbered. I would have included your family but its a bit late for that and I dont want to salt fresh wounds. No. Thats not why I am here. I guess I am a scholar of sorts, and have found an old tome detailing very well of the events foretold. You see, so far it has been completely accurate, since, oh, the first humans existed. It gave exact dates and times. And you know what? Heh heh. You got about a year left.'
I think I was supposed to be surprised, but with my families track record . . . 'It said either you are going to be dead, or destroy the one who is controlling the tides of fate.' I asked it 'Whats controlling the tides of fate!?' It replied 'I dont know, the tome didnt say what it was, where it is, or how to get it, just that its up to you.”
The freak finally stopped staring at me. 'Is that so?' He gave another stupid chuckle 'Heh, heh. Too bad the tome is gone now, burned by its own magic upon being read, but its up to you whether you believe me, but just for reassurance, heres your brothers last moments.' He disappeared in thin air and under where he was, a cracked disc laid on the ground. The fog seemingly became less thick as I picked it up." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------Welcome to Project Cavern Legend-------------------------------------
This project is my first attempt making an adventure map. Perhaps I should have started smaller but I wanted something that can really spark my imagination and I felt a smaller map would not cut the cake.
Essentially I wanted to incorporate all the mobs, many of the blocks and just all around Minecraft quirks as possible into a world that both compliments itself as well as provide unique environments. For example I have a reason for why the player can not eat mushrooms unless they are stewed together. Its little details like this as well as the larger ones I plan to bring into the game to breath life into the story.
In game stories progress
I have the ruff-draft of the back story written as well as the planned layout of the map. I also have started writing several paragraphs of stories. I am planing to have much of the story written in books the player can find through out the map.
I would say about 25% of the in game stories are written thus far.
Inspirations
I take inspiration from Daisuke Amaya's game “Cave Story” as the game takes place underground, Jim Henson and Frank Oz's dark crystal as the player is the last of his/her species, general rpgs from the early 90s and late 80s. The game itself starts in an underground city.
I used to write a lot more than I do now but as time went on I found myself writing less and less for various reasons. Looking at my writings from years gone by I noticed my skills are now noticeably weaker. I have more trouble putting what I image onto paper and my vocabulary has really taken a nose dive. I don’t mind using a thesaurus though. I am taking this project up partially to hone my writing.
Experience
Other than the aforementioned writing I have headed vast projects on servers (as a player). The one sticking out most to me is when I created a town so massive when I measured its length (assuming each block is a meter) it was half a mile long. Considering I did this ONLY with survival by myself, I believe this to be a respectable accomplishment. The buildings all had different functions and unique designs. The entirety of the town had roads made of stone half stabs and brick.
For those of you who feel half a mile in length is not very much, that is over 800 blocks long or 50 chunks in length (“chunks in length” I am not sure why I find saying it amusing). So I am familiar with undertaking large projects. I also played around with command blocks recently.
Story Line
I have yet to fully outline a goal for the player. Ultimately I would like to have the player gather objects (emeralds perhaps?) allowing access to other areas of the game (like keys). I have found several videos online for such items and am as of right now still playing around with different designs.
When it's completed
I plan to make it a download rather than a server. I strongly doubt my computer could handle running it on its own. (I have never seen it exceed 50 fps). I will need to find a site I can upload the map to. It will need to be free and able to accommodate the map of course. I will cross that bridge when it comes.
Aid
I am also waiting for world edit to be out for 1.8. At some point I am going to name the map. “Cavern Legend” is just a name inspired by Cave Story to give this project a name. The game's name will be different.
I will also list some questions I have while making it as this is partially a topic to ask for help:
Is there a villager summoning generator somewhere on the web which also features a way to control what they trade?
Is there any mods I should know about that would help with this project? Keep in mind I want to allow the game to be accessible to those who use vanilla Minecraft as well as not straining my computer greatly or corrupting my world.
Is it possible to add music to the adventure map (assuming it will be a download) while still being vanilla enough for the players to not require a mod?

A thought just came to me. If I can figure out how to have villagers trade exactly what I want them to as well as disabling trade, I can release beta or alpha versions of the map for anyone interested at taking a look. Its also worth noting that I have finished building the starting town (minus the nps and placing of goods in chests to find).

Update! I have carved out much of the cavern for the next area, but due to lag issues I will have to continue the project when world edit for 1.8 is released. Also go ahead and post here when it does come out for 1.8.

I dont seem to be getting any attention for this, so I am adding the what is essentially the synopsis of the adventure, or rather the first thing that would be read by the player. This may also serve as my introductory to the ad I will use when I complete this adventure map. I am hoping it will be catchy and its a taste for the tone I am setting. Let me know how it is.

I can help with your locked doors situation, as I've recently made such a door not to long ago for an adventure map
First things first you'll need to set up a fill clock (look it up if you don't know how to make it)
Then put this command on the fill clock to create the door: /testfor @p[x=???,y=???,z=???,r=???] {Inventory:[{id:"%%%"}]} (replace the "???" with coords, "%%%" with item)
Remove item: /clear @p minecraft:%%%
This next bit is for if you want the door to be re-openable: Summon a command block beside the fill clock with: /setblock x y z minecraft:command_block 1 replace {Command:"testfor @p[x=???,y=???,z=???,r=???]"}
Remove the door: /fill x1 y1 z1 x2 y2 z2 air
Fill in door: /fill x1 y1 z1 x2 y2 z2 block
Not sure if just looking at the commands will help, maybe I can get an image in here.

Also, You cannot change where the end portal takes you.
Checkpoints can be done with the "spawnpoint" command.
You can run a fill clock to remove all items on the ground with "/kill @e[type=Item]". Although, if you're planning to have items be on the ground somewhere in the map, maybe just make it run after each creeper explosion?
It is possible to change villager trades via command blocks(which answers two of your questions :3) Though, I haven't figured it out myself...
Here's some names of youtubers that do a pretty good job at making redstone things: Dragnoz, Squirtdude, logstoneable, jespertheend, simplysarc, wumpacraft, purple_,octavigon.Hope some of those guys will give you info on stuff you'd like in your map! I know they did for me

Thank you! Though at first glance it looks like its a bit beyond my current skill of redstone, so I am defiantly going to need to play around with it, but once I get down its going to save me a lot of trouble.

Darn, cant change where end portal takes you. Oh well, I can work around that. Its one of the lesser things I needed. I should have known about the spawnpoint command. I thought it could only be used once per map in vanilla. Not sure why. I found out by doing some experimenting that its not actually from the amount of items on the ground but rather how huge the tunnels are (I think). It could also be generalized lag as every new map I make has the same amount (about 1 frame per second when I or the view is in motion). I had the same issue a while back and read somewhere that deleting a certain file helped and it did, but this was back in 1.1 and I dont know if it can be solved as easily. So I am waiting for both worldedit and optifine to be out for 1.8. As for the villagers thats something I will look up, but I am glad there is a way to do it because that is one of the major things I need. I will definitely look up those youtubers, but my redstone skills are only average at best.
You have no idea how much better this looks than almost every other "FiRSt MAP LOL" topic I've ever seen. I look forward to trying this out.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
So I was working on this really cool resource pack a while ago, but bad progress nonwithstanding, I think I found something much better... I'm probably gonna never release another custom Minecraft map.Until we meet again...

As I am making the stories for the books in game, I remembered I have some music I made via MIDI format and am wondering if it is possible to add said music to the adventure map (assuming it will be a download) while still being vanilla enough for the players to not require a mod?
well, I do admit that there is a lot of text, and I didn't bother reading too much of it. try spliting it into pragraphs with titles and stuff, to make it more digestable :), other than that , good luck with your map, looks pretty good from the pics I saw
Thank you. I have since separated more of the text and added titles to much of the body. I am going to see about adding pictures to the text itself and reducing it a bit as well.
