Hi, this is my first forum here, so if there is something not good enough, tell me in the comments. Anyways, let's get into the topic quickly.
Why Paint 3D?
Paint 3D is a default app in newer Windows. The way to use it was actually pretty simple, I bet you can create a nice skin within 10 minutes if using this app well.
Advantages:
Large and simple UI, can find tools easily
Disadvantages:
Not many tools are available
Needed Tools
To create a skin, all we need are mostly just Pixel Pen (1px), Eraser (1px), and the Select Tool. That's all.
An example skin (My OC) made with only 3 tools on Paint 3D:
Simple Tricks → Less Time Needed
Most of the tricks also work on other drawing apps. But in terms of efficiency, Paint 3D can use these tricks much faster as Paint 3D's features are less complex compared to other apps.
Fast, Simple Hair Painting
By using the Select Tool in Paint 3D, we can make gradient effects much faster by changing the size of a pattern. This highly shortens the time working on hair.
This is how hair is made using this method:
Step by step:
Draw a 3x3 "Sandwich" using Pixel Pen. (Gradient Base)
Stretch the "Sandwich" until 8x8. (Gradient)
Stretch the 4x8 in the middle to 8x8 (Color Adjustment, Skippable)
Add details on the gradient
Use Outlines Instead of Shaders
Actually, shading is quite a lot of work in my opinion. Instead, you should use outlines as it saves more time and energy.
I used 25% black as the outline in this example. (It's the best to use 10~15%)
You could just put these outlines on clothes instead of wasting time shading them.
Never use Black to Shade Skins
Using black to make shades on skins is a bad idea, using black makes skins look less clean and weird. Instead, you should use red (5~10%) as the shade for skins
Using a small amount of red can make the skin much more alive, it could be a better choice in my opinion.
Add Shadows to the Inner Part of the Skin
Adding shadows to the inner parts of your skin can make your skin looks much more "3D".
The Red parts below are the inner parts of the skin:
Those are the tricks that I used in common, study them when you have time.
Of course, the time took to finish creating skin also depends on how complicated your skin is. For example, I completed my OC skin (The texture above) used for only 20 minutes.
The first post stops here. I will post more details on skin making when I have free time.
