I'm under the impression that spider_eyes.png is responsible for the glow of spider eyes at night.
I believe that if I change spider_eyes.png, the pattern that glows on the spiders face will change with it.
The new body texture of my spider worked fine, and I intended to reshape the spider_eyes.png file to make the appropriate pixels glow on the face, since the shape and size of the eyes changed.
The new images are in the folders in the correct places, yet for some reason my spiders will display their new body textures with the default eye textures.

Would you care to post your files rather than hoping we just randomly guess what happened? I think that this would probably be more expedient in getting you an answer.
Filling the png with black no longer works- I'm using novaskin btw. Any suggestions for fixing this in
1.8?
It absolutely should. To my knowledge, the rendering for glowing overlays hasn't changed in quite some time. I haven't noticed my black-background glowing overlay files to have been messed up in 1.8, either.
Your issue might stem novaskin, it might use black as transparent or save it improperly in some other way. Most texture artists don't use novaskin either, well, there are better tools out there. By comparison, things like novaskin or other resource pack making programs are like these:
So if it is novaskin's fault, people around here aren't likely to know. If you're serious about resource pack making, you should be using GIMP or paint.NET (GIMP being the better choice if you have the patience to learn). Using the proper tools puts your experience in your hands rather than how well somebody made a beginner's tool.

I gave you the .png I was using because I can't figure out how to share files through the forums, do you need me to send the whole pack through a MediaFire link instead?
Here's what I get when I try using that file in-game.
I'm guessing your problem is that you're using novaskin. The solution is not to use novaskin, and instead learn how to properly construct a resource pack. I suggest reading the All-Inclusive Guide to Texturing to help you get started.

Thank you I succeeded, and it turned out that Novaskin just put the spider_eyes.png in the spider folder instead of in the entity folder by itself.

This solution also does not work:
