I am trying to make a new resource pack with custom sounds inside of it. There was one problem I ran into with the villagers. If you edit one sound in the villagers folder that edit applies to all types of villagers. Since there are 5 different types of villagers (Farmer, Librarian, Priest, Blacksmith, Butcher) I was hoping I could make custom sounds for each type.
At first I tried (lets use the death sound for example) copying and pasting the "death" sound in the villagers folder and naming the new copy "death_butcher" because the name of the texture of the butcher villager is "villager_butcher". I was hoping that because of the added "butcher" in the name the game would realize it only wanted that sound applied to the butcher villager. It didn't work. I also tried "death_villager_butcher" and it didn't work. Sadly then I realized that it is probably more complicated that just renaming a copied file so I search it on the internet. I couldn't find anything. Please, if you know how to get this to work message below.

You are wrong, friend. In fact, resource packs do allow for new sounds---that is one of the charming new features of resource packs.
For instance, Sphax gives villagers Jawa skins and has them running around saying "OOTEENEE!!"
It's hilarious.
Also, to the original poster, I wish I knew the answer to your question, but I don't. I am interested in finding out though because it would be really instructive, so I'll keep an eye on this thread. Also, if I come across teh answer I'll post it back in here.

No, I believe you're mistaken. Sphax edits existing sounds. It replaces the sounds that were already there. What OP is trying to do is add sounds that aren't there in the original game. You can't add new sounds any more than you can add new textures.
You, sadly, cannot make them role specific. All villagers share the same sounds. So you can change the sounds for all the villagers, but only the once already in game, or you're in mod land. So I suggest just do it for all, unless you can code in those sounds.

Correct.
