After I finished my texture pack, I realize I've been out of the Minecraft loop for too long and I'm not sure which mods are really popular nowadays.
I've added support for the mods that I knew and liked before (EE3, Twilight Forest, Mystcraft, Thermal Expansion), but after that I'm just not sure what else to add.
I suppose I could add CTM support, but that's too much messing with mcmetas for my taste.
So what mods are really popular or still updated nowadays?
Hard to say what exactly is popular now... kinda depends on how long a person's been absent.
Some of the newer "modpack staple" type mods that I know of are:
Botania
Chisel
Carpenter's Blocks
Tinker's Construct
Progressive Automation (easy one there, not a huge mod)
Blood Magic
JABBA

Some of the newer "modpack staple" type mods that I know of are:
"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly.
It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

The only issue is that most mods haven't updated up to 1.8 from 1.7 due to the massive coding changes that came with it. One thing to look for is to look up one of the popular Modpacks, ie. Tekkit, Feed the Beast, Leo's Modpacks... These modpacks probably would have some mods that overlap each other and give you a few ideas of what mods are most used by proxy.

...But that's just my opinion.
My DeviantART, requests welcome.
B14 - My Texture Pack!
Need textures for your mod? Inquire within, just read the rules.
Better than Wolves?
Wow, that's still a thing?
...But that's just my opinion.

I wouldn't really say that it is, actually.

This, but I'd also add:
OpenBlocks
Thermal Dynamics/Expansion
EnderIO
Thaumcraft

Are there any old ones that are still going strong?
Been out of the loop for 2 years, and I just don't really know anymore.

Biomes o' Plenty's still a thing.

I hope that helps.
I'm pretty sure BtW is still going, though I'm not sure if it's that popular. Heck, I'm not sure if Minecraft is that popular now either.
