-CREATING THE RESOURCE PACK-
To easily create a Helpful Villagers resource pack start by downloading the example resource pack: Example Pack
Once it's downloaded move it to the resourcepacks folder in your .minecraft directory as shown below.
After you've moved the file, extract all of it's files to the current directory and delete the original .zip file (or move it to another directory). If successful you should see a folder named assets and a file named pack.mcmeta like so.
Now open the assets folder and continue opening each subfolder until you reach one named villager. Open this folder and inside you will find the skin textures for each type of villager. To change a texture either edit it with an image editor (Photoshop, GIMP, etc.) or replace it with another skin texture. Any skin that can be used as a player skin can also be used as a villager skin, just make sure to rename it so that it matches one of the original villager skin names. In the image below I have replaced the Lumberjack skin with the original "Steve" player skin.
After you're done changing the skins return to the resourcepacks folder and either rezip assets and pack.mcmeta into a new .zip file or create a new folder inside the resourcepacks directory and place them in there. Keep in mind that whichever method you choose, the name of the .zip file or folder will be the name of your resource pack. Below I have added my files to the My Custom Pack folder.
That's it! Now whenever you want to use this resource pack simply start Minecraft and go to Options -> Resource Packs, and select your resource pack on the left side of the screen like so.
Now all of my Lumberjacks will look like Steve and the rest of the villagers will retain their default skin.
Optional: To change the description of your resource pack, open the pack.mcmeta file with a text editor and change the words after description:

I hope this also works with other mods, then I can create my own texture pack for my modpack (When it gets released), and nice tutorial, although the final image does have loads of stray pixels on it..

Yea my graphics card is almost dead that's why the quality sucks on the last one.

geez. I know how you feel.. I'm using a separate computer right now to beta-test my mod (If there's enough memory for it) Since my normal one doesn't have enough memory to run my modpack, it'll just crash in a world.

It's nice to see a mod maker encouraging resource pack makers to create textures for his mod.
Of course, you could have saved yourself a long-winded explanation and just said "You add textures for this mod the same way you do for any other mod". If someone didn't already know how to do it, they may even think that it has to be a separate pack rather than being able to be incorporated into an existing resource pack. Not cool to mislead newbies like that.
Kinda off topic but... why don't the villagers in your mod have gigantic noses? Having the noses painted on seems weird after one has gotten used to the vanilla villagers. You really should use the zombie villager model for your mod instead of the player model. It'll make it less easy to add custom skins (since the UV layouts are different) but it would make the mod look better overall. An even better option would be to adapt the villager model to have arms so that they could fold or unfold their arms depending on what mode they're in. Folded means they're following or traveling while unfolded shows they're working.
Regardless, good on you for encouraging resource pack support for your mod!

This thread is meant to serve as a tutorial for those who are unfamiliar with resource packs but still wish to change villager skins (which has been requested several times), and also as a place for fans of the mod to share their customized skins with others. Also, the villager models are the way they are because it's functional, easily customizable, and it doesn't require me to waste time on minor aesthetic details. After I've added a lot of the important features I plan on implementing then I may readdress the issue but for now they're staying the way they are. If you have any other comments or questions regarding the functionality of the mod please refer to the main mod thread.
Do you speak Spanish? google translator does not help me PLEASE : please make the villagers to defend regardless spend their tools are so helpless that I'm sad every time I read "a villager was killed by a zombi"
Is it just me? . they keep spamming the door, and some lurking around eventhough it's nighttime.... and the Lumberjack and Miner can't find their spot... they just stand infront of their guild hall after taking their tools...
And they just walk when trying to get away from zombies.

I combined this with the mute villagers resource pack, replaced the skins with steves with different color shirts, and added the damage/hit1.ogg sound you would normally hear when a player gets hurt. I call it the helpful steves resource pack
Hey there all! I love this mod, but I wanted to do something nice to show my thanks (being thanksgiving and all!), so I made some replacement textures for the villagers I plan on making female versions of these also later so you can mix and match by downloading separate zip files, and just dragging and dropping the ones you want into the correct folders. I'll edit this post when the female ones are done. :3
Feel free to use these for whatever you like (they can also be used as player skins) just do me a favor and gimme some credit if you use them for something
Why would you want to replace a villager skin, I must know. Villagers are awesome mobs, and have quite nice texture, this is the least thing I would want to happen to one of my favourite mods!
I've been using Wolfofthenyght's textures (six posts above mine) for my villagers for some time, and I really like them a lot. There were a few things here and there that I eventually made changes to, but after the 1.3 update and two new professions emerged, I decided to create new textures for the merchant, fisherman, and rancher in the same mold as Wolf's textures, as well as refine my edits of the existing textures.
Below you will find images of the new textures, and the layouts within the spoilers. Just download the layouts and replace existing textures within Wolfofthenyght's resource pack.

Hi Wolfofthenyght,
I like your replacement textures for the villagers,
just one thing, can you make a replacement texture for the merchants, just like the other villagers?
Thanks, :-)
