Like the GUIde? You can help!
I don’t play Minecraft much anymore, so it’s hard for me to keep up with changes and additions. To keep this post updated, I need to know about changes both in the files and in the way Minecraft reads them. If you know of anything that is wrong or outdated in the GUIde, or you notice a change in any part of Minecraft’s GUI, post here (or PM me) and let me know. I will check it out and update this thing.
And it should go without saying, but if you wish to represent this information in a different form somewhere else (i.e. don’t just copy and paste this), such as by making your own guide to retexturing Minecraft’s GUI, I can’t stop you.
Currently authorised to display the GUIde:
Cycloneblaze (Minecraft Forums)
The GUIde is, as the name suggests, a complete and instructive guide to the intricacies of Minecraft's GUI textures for all you resource pack makers out there. The GUI images are not at all intuitive and there is no help or information to figure out how they work - until three or so years ago now, that is!
Previously the GUIde was featured across one, then three, posts in this and an older thread. Now it lives in a Google Doc so I can update it without wrangling with the forum software. The GUIde is updated (eventually) to the latest major version of Minecraft and this thread is monitored for comments, questions, or additions.
Speaking of which, if you have any comments, questions, or additions, you are encouraged to contribute by making a post here! Or private messaging me. Many updates to the GUIde have been predicated by the help of diligent readers, as you may see below. Any information at all is welcome, especially if the guide seems to be out of date.
For those who want to know:
Spectator mode icons can be shown by pressing the keys 1-9 or Button 3 on the mouse. The first icon is for "Teleport to player". The second icon is for "teleport to team" and the barrier icon is for closing the menu.
Server_selection is NOT the same as resource_packs! The arrows are shifted to the opposite side of their boxes.
Have updated my "The All-Inclusive UPDATED Guide to Texturing" page to include both the old GUIde page & this new updated one.
Your section can be found right here under the Gui Spoiler. (I also am having problems with a post being to long to post).
I suggest checking out the 1.7.10 pre-release. It does the Minecraft Realms buttons differently, putting them all in their own folder. The 1.7.9 version you show will be effectively obsolete in just a couple of days when the official 1.7.10 release is out. Apparently, this is the version that will be used going forward so you should include it in this wonderful guide.
Also, followed and bookmarked for future reference. Thanks for keeping this up, Cycloneblaze!

It was in /assets/minecraft/textures/gui/realms/... but I just checked the official 1.7.10 release and it seems to have been removed. Curious.
If you want to see this folder, enable snapshots in your launcher and download 1.7.10-pre3. I'm guessing they moved all of these images to be server-side so they could change the GUI of Realms on the fly without having it be version-dependent. Naturally, they don't work in packs anymore.

So yea... never mind.
I would at least expect them to be in the virtual assets, but no luck. Well, we now have Minecraft's very first hardcoded texture atlases.

Right, I'm back. Duly noted, you two. I'll update today or tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback!

Ha. Ha.
Yes, I'm back, after a year and a day of ignoring this thing, lol. I have updated all the things that needed to be updated, as you can see in the changelog. Unfortunately, I've been gone so long that the forum software has updated and the BBcode is slightly screwy now. All the information is there, I just need to make it look better... :x
Hopefully Minecraft will not update for a year longer, haha, because I don't think I'll be looking at this for awhile...
And now the two comments I got in the intervening period:
An update for the realms textures. They were actually moved to /assets/realms/textures/gui back in 1.7.10, in which there are two folders, /realms and /title. The realms texture from title.png is in /title, and the rest are in /realms. The textures are all individual files, presumably cropped to use all the image space, in contrast to the rest of the GUI. The files can be accessed by opening .minecraft/libraries/com/mojang/realms/<version>/realms-<version>.jar, but here is a list of the files:
In /realms
cross_icon (8x7): Displayed next to a player's status on the configuration screen
expired_icon (15x15): Used on the Minecraft Realms menu to indicate that the realm is expired
invitation_icons (48x8): Appears over the invite icon, displaying the number of pending invitations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or more than 5)
invite_icon (31x25): Displayed on the Minecraft Realms menu next to the title
off_icon (15x15): Used on the Minecraft Realms menu to indicate that the realm is deactivated
on_icon (15x15): Used on the Minecraft Realms menu to indicate that the realm is activated
op_icon (8x7): Used on the configuration screen to indicate that the player is an operator.
plus_icon (15x15): Use is unclear, however it may be a symbol used on the realms backups menu
restore_icon (23x28): Appears in the realms backups menu next to each backup
toggle_off_icon (32x16): Appears on the configuration screen when the realm is deactivated
toggle_on_icon (32x16): Appears on the configuration screen when the realm is activated
user_icon (8x7): Used on the configuration screen to indicate that the player is a normal user
world_icon (40x20): No documented use
in /title
realms (211x48): Appears as the title on the Minecraft Realms menu

Thanks kwerti, that makes a lot of sense. I'll have to put together a section on it; shouldn't be too hard. I might quote some of what you wrote there, would you mind?

I'm surprised you could make the creative inventory translucent to be honest, I wouldn't have thought it would work on either. You can probably make it full transparent, but I doubt it responds to any alpha values that aren't 0 and 255.
P.S. Yes, I am watching this thread. The OP is actually hell to update though, the forum software's very screwy :/

love this guide and bookmarked it <3 however, 1.9 brought on a few new changes. i just started looking into it, and it seems there is a new icon for when mobs take damage, the health bars are now in there own png, and a few other changes if you want to look into updating this still.

So I moved the GUIde to a Google Doc. Frankly it was just messed up here and before I updated it I needed to somehow fix the layout, which just... wasn't happening. Hell, I can't even make the text in the OP into a quote without having that ugly newline on top of it. If I take it out, the whole quote block vanishes? What??
While I moved it, I didn't actually update it (was getting quite comfortable with not bothering, until 1.9 finally actually released). I plan to do that at some point. So if you're reading it now and it looks outdated, that would be because it is outdated. Even so I hope it remains useful for the time being. Anyone who does know anything that did change (like you, nyssaz), please post and let me know! It'll help immensely.

Check out Crowdford here.
Is there any way to have translucency in the gui container textures? I can only make the creative inventory translucent.
