UPDATE: (I noticed my replies are missing, again. I wrote them soon after your responses, but Curse deletes my replies/posts/comments about 75% of the time after I leave the site. I've never figured it out. Editing a successfully-stuck-comment works most of the time. You'll probably never notice this edit, but it's all I have.) Tommsy64: Thank you so much for your reply, this fixed everything. Yes, I am on a Mac, and your fix worked beautifully and I didn't have to download any additional programs. Plus, I learned something new. Thank you so much. Markacashion: I promise I was not trying to make you do work for me or be lazy. My post was not meant to be taken as a demand or a complaint. It was simply a suggestion and a plea for help. As I indicated, I did attempt to get the files myself, and it wasn't working. Also, as I indicated, downloading another program in addition to the 3 already on this Mac seems insane when, from my-perspective-at-the-time, it would be easier to share the files online. The official 1.8 changed a lot of item names in the texture pack and added several new items, so these major changes seems like a good reason to share an updated texture pack. I don't think anyone would expect you to re-share a pack every little weekly snapshot, even if you could (why even bother?). That being said, I apologize for asking you to do something illegal. It never even occurred to me that sharing the default texture pack would, in fact, be distributing part of the game and therefore illegal. Minecraft has been so friendly with user-created content such as mods, texture packs, and game saves, it honestly didn't even cross my mind. Certainly, it was never mentioned in any of the search results I spent hours and hours scrolling through. Sorry to waste your time.
------------ Could you please include an already created default resource pack? I do not have the ability to open the jar file. (Official 1.8, not the beta versions)
When I tried to open the jar, it only showed a ton of .class files. No assets folder and no folders of any kind. Downloading another special program just to open a jar file just to get a default pack, which I'll only ever need to do once (per big update) seems ridiculous. For some reason, I am having trouble finding a default sample pack for 1.8, my search just keeps bringing up discussions, no packs to download.
I was able to make it so the pumpkins in my field have no faces, yet the helmet pumpkin still works. Thanks.
You're welcome:)
I'm happy to see this guide is helping people. That's why I decide to keep Steelfeathers' original "The All-Inclusive Guide to Texturing" going.
Can you please add an already prepared default resource pack to your guide? I cannot open the jar file. (Official 1.8, not the beta versions)
When I extracted the jar file, it only gave me a ton of .class files, no assets folder, no folders at all. It's silly to have to download another program just to open a jar file, which I never do. I was always able to find sample default packs before, but my searches for 1.8 template/default/sample resource/texture packs (etc.) are not working!
Could anyone that has the right program share the assets folder with me?
(But I do suggest you put it in your guide as well)
Thanks
No, I can't. I can't do that, because 1) it would be illegal as it's against Copyright Laws, 2) there SHOULDN'T be any sample default packs, if there is then report them as it breaks Copyright laws, 3) you can download WinRAR or 7zip(both which are free) & open it to find the files, & 4) if I just give you the guide then I will have to update it every for every weekly snapshot & I would have to get permission from Mojang to do it; & also if I did do it, you wouldn't learn how to get new textures from the weekly snapshots by yourself. If you do it by yourself, then you will learn how to do it, which makes getting textures from the .jar files a lot easier.

You are right about downloading another program. A jar is actually the exact same thing as a zip, but java by default runs a jar file but not a zip file. So simply renaming the 1.8.jar to 1.8.zip and extracting the zip will not cause any problems. You can still extract either one(including the jar).
As for only class files in the 1.8: I thought I had the same problem; when I looked at it in the default mac finder name sorting I only saw the class files. Just sort them by type and not name and delete all .class files, META-INF, net, and log4j2.xml.
The pack.mcmeta anchor under Getting Started is broken.
Thanks for being this to my attention, but it seems to be a problem with the MinecraftForums' page code as all anchors are broken. (I tested them all after seeing your comment). But still thank you for showing me this, I will tell the MinecraftForums Staff about this bug.

Lol, it's fine. At least you told me that the one of the anchors were broken. If you didn't tell me, then I wouldn't of known about the bug & wouldn't be able to tell the staff.
I have a (surprise, surprise) question about pack.mcmeta.
I don't have one in my minecraft files to copy out. It's not there. I tried a fresh install of minecraft to see if there were shenanigans happening somehow with a messed up update, but it's just not there. The instructions to "just make one," aren't... terribly helpful because I have no idea how to make a .mcmeta file. Attempting to make one is going to give me a pack.mcmeta.txt or something else silly.
I did manage to grab one from another texture pack so that I can at least test my own images as I go along, but I cannot edit it in any way because windows has no idea what to do with a .mcmeta file, and I clearly have no idea what to tell it to do.
I dont know if this is my punishment for not finishing the texture pack I started years ago or what, but I'm hoping that I've suffered enough and can get some explanation on what the heck one does with this ridiculous, hell sent(actually, I wish. That would mean I had one in the first place, which would have been one less headahce) required file.

Right click and open the mcmeta file with the notepad, or other text editor.

If you are using Windows then when using Notepad to create a pack.mcmeta create it like normal, BUT when you try to save the file, click where it says "Save File As:" (or something like that) & click "All Files '*'". Then name the file as pack.mcmeta. Now you should have a pack.mcmeta file & not a pack.mcmeta.txt file.
Also Notepad can open .mcmeta files.
When i get my new computer(I'm on my phone currently), i will also add in videos for certain things. Sometimes words can't really explain what you need to do, do you need a visual medium (a series of pictures or a video, for example) to help explain how to do something. If you want to help me with these videos, i will add them to the OP.
