Thought I would post in here, since it is a texture issue...
Since the recent snapshots (specifically the new texture formats) it seems that textures are going to "take one for the team"...
I have been diligantly working on a "new" pack, that ranges from 64 - 512x. While creating textures, I start in 512x; then I work my way down in scale, adjusting/tweaking as needed. Before I switch sizes however, I log into the game and test/screen capture the new textures. This brings us to the "it" in "it is a texture issue".
The new texture format has removed the need for terrain.png. At least the actual file in a texture pack folder/zip. What happens now, is MC takes the folder "Textures" and makes two new "pretend" .pngs; will call them "fakeTerrain.png" and "fakeItems.png"
These two files act exactly like their counterparts, with one distinct flaw. In a 256x pack, "terrain.png" ends up actually equal to the size of: 4096x
Normally, splitting that down into smaller pixels is a good thing. (IE seperate pngs for each block) Which is 1/2 of what they did. Well, remember, I said I was making a 512x pack. So my terrain.png would have been 8192x.
That's just too large for a "game texture". Heck, it's larger than most desktop backgrounds! Regardless, since Minecraft has a pretending fit during texture creation, guess what it is making (in addition to world generation, etc)? That's right, fakeTerrain.png is becoming TOO LARGE for the game to handle properly.
My computer just stopped loading the game completely. (Finished too many textures) Once I deleted a couple of them, the game started "working" again. I say "working" because 1 - 0 FPS isn't really "working".
In closing, I would like to state: Using MCPatcher, I didn't experience lag until I used a 2048x scale pack (Or a 32768x terrain.png)
PS: This is just an FYI post, I have been scouring for several days to come up with something. And I figure at least one other person out there is hitting this wall too. If not, congratulations!
I experienced this as well, I was working on my 512x pack in 1.5(snapshots or w/e) format then got to the point where it wouldn't load. I switched back to 1.4.7 to finish it up and figured I'd wait till the official 1.5 release to see if the problem was fixed.

It's alright, though I'm unsure of what to do for the middle bits
I think it looks best without anything to "clutter" the middle. The nails can be there if you want, but the rest of the middle looks best in the solid base colour. Since there are so few pixels in each plank, you can't get enough into the centre to fit any pattern or design.

Yes! Those look great! A little bit of variation in the middle part is fine and can look good, you just didn't put in too much and make it look bad. I love your dark, slightly reddish colour for spruce, though jungle planks could be a bit more red... But that one's up to you. The planks look nice!

Thanks, and I kinda like the pinkishness of the Jungle Wood, though I may try to give it a little more red.
Thinking of trying for a full pack too, assuming I can actually create some good shapes for the stone/dirt :I
Thoughts? (Trying for a geode look for the quartz. Probably do a giant quartz crystals for the blocks and pillars. Still don't know what to pull off with the chiseled...)

Well, the idea is awesome but I thing you can pull of the whole thing a bit better.
EDIT: All hail the 42nd post!
I think I'm just going to post everything in this post now so that I can keep this amazing member title.

lol okay.
Don't feel bad. People look at my pack and swear up and down that I over used a noise filter on half my textures, when no filter was used at all.
You mean like these?
Oak & Spruce
Jungle & Birch

Both of these textures are awesome. No real gripes here.
What's the resolution though? 64?
Really amazing work man, you're really quite talented. I love the varying colours in the chests.
And the shaders are glorious.
Grass
stone brick, mossy stone brick, and cracked stone brick
emerald, gold, lapis, and diamond blocks
brick, bookshelf, and wooden door

Here's a quartz geode:
But after much observation there is a bit that needs a lot of love here and will be fixed up here soon
might pull off something like this \/
Puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurfect.
Nice song.
@ thecrazydude, it looks like a cross-section of a petrified worm.
But I don't have any idea for the dropper or the down-facing dispenser. What would you do?
I completely re-did the shading on my cobblestone, even though it barely looks different.
*Or a smiley face.
