I'm wandering this too!!! I don't have time to test it out right now, BUT next week I should be able to test it out.
But my guess is probably not. The variants are hard-coded if I would have to guess.
It was already tried, and the answer is unfortunately "no".
You can do something very close to that but you'd have to either learn how to edit the json files by hand, or use one of the free editors out there.
How ever you cant add NEW blocks with it, only edit the default blocks. I don't know what block you can edit to place a chair, more so make it directional..
Maybe one of the stair types, but that'll end up looking weird if someone used that type for say a roof, or a path...
Right. So the only option for now is to use Cubik and the like then?
I strongly recommend Opl's Model Creator. It's free and WAY easier to use than Techne ever was. Believe me, I used Techne extensively... and loathed every minute of it.
Barring that, there's also MC Model Maker. I haven't tried it personally, but others seem to like it quite a lot.
I recommend against Cubik. Not only do you have to buy it to unlock a decent amount of functionality, but it's still quite buggy and from what I gather not completely up-to-date with the current format. Best avoid it for the time being.
Hey, guys? I was trying to do a thing with ores, and I tried to make a surface partially transparent to allow for a negative block to intersect, rather than building a bounding box. It's not working. Is there any way to turn on transparency for solid block textures?

Sadly, no.
The devs see it as "this block should never be transparent" and put it in a renderpass that doesn't allow it, which also happens to break x-ray packs.
So even though the end result would not have you see through it, and it gives you a much simpler model, it's not possible. You need to make a much more complex model where instead of making the inset sections have a transparent texture, you need to manually create it by using boxes. For instance, 1 square hole would require 4 boxes to create it. If you're doing tons of little and complicated insets, you're going to need quite a head-warping complicated model.
EDIT: Late to the party with my longer post. D'Oh!

Ok, I posted it. Here's the link so we can see feedback if it gets any traction.

Aw :'( just as I guessed. Sometime I hate it when I'm right.
That makes me a sad cookie. I hope they add it at some time.
Dirt and coarse dirt also have snowy states, but they cannot be edited as of now.
Putting the CENDENT back in transcendent!

No, there is none in vanilla.
