I bet people are already crying and cursing because of the simplifiied doors, but now it's consistent. That's what packs are for...
That's pretty much the entirety of the Reddit thread for this snapshot.
I'm honestly happy they did this. Less happy that they made the items look like crap to make them more consistent with the ancient Oak Door texture... but what'cha gunna do? I'm sure more people would have felt pooper persecuted if they'd dared to update such a 'classic' Minecraft texture to be consistent with the new doors.
Hold onto your hats boys and girls because winter is comming 1.8 is comming.
1.7.10 => 1.8-pre1
The biggest (and best IMO) change for 1.8 is the addition of the model system. We now have almost complete control over how blocks and items look in the game. We even have a built in way to do random textures. (We do not though have a built in way to do connected textures so if that's your thing you will still need to mod the game.) Even if you don't plan on doing your own custom models for your pack you should probably still look into the model system as it lets you fix a lot of the problems with the exiting models. A pack that takes the time to do fence specific textures is probably going to look better than one that still re-uses the plank texture.
The only guide I know of for doing vanilla models is this one: Vanilla Model Tutorial
The OP hasn't been updated since the start of July though so some of the information there is out of date.
(Read the whole thread if you want the more recent info.)
The wiki is also a good source for information on the model format. Block Models on the Wiki That seems to be mostly up-to-date but I note that "builtin/entity" is missing in the item model section for the skull items. It's updated now.
The absolute best source of info though is to just unzip the jar file and look at the model files in the default pack. Full Changelog
