Age is just a number... buuut... seeing as how everyone's showing off, I'm 29.
But yeah. It's still just a number, as long as you have the clear headedness needed to take honest criticism, the gull to experiment, and ultimately the dedication to honing a craft (yes drawing and painting are crafts and CAN be taught... always p---ed me off when someone said those three words 'You're so TALENTED.' They need to read some quotes from Michelangelo)
But also I prove an exception to the rule XD My pack isn't really 'popular' more like cult following XD
I'm 17 this year but have been texturing for 3 years now. I don't think anything has fundamentally changed in how I work, though I guess I do lack concentration and staying-power. I generally start really strong and slow down when I get to the hardest textures - mobs and GUI. I also get bored of working on one theme pretty quickly (which is something I think an older user would have less trouble with - Glimmar point in case) which explains my three WIP TP's.
Over the time I've been doing this my ability has improved, but not steadily. I'll suddenly understand some design concept to make shading better, as an example, but some things I do haven't really improved since I first laid mouse to pixel.
Though you can't really call my textures popular; I've only released one pack to 400 total downloads
I'm turning 32 in two weeks, so I guess I'm old, LOL.
I put a lot of focused time and effort into my pack, but my enemy is always time. I do wish I had as much time as I did in high school or college. Sure, there was a lot of homework and study, I remember that... but nothing beats school vacations.
I got into texturing when I was 19 years old, making skins for Quake 3: Arena. Those were great times, I was able to put out a lot of content. Too bad I totally sucked at texturing back then, although it wasn't for lack of effort!
Well I'm pretty lucky in that all the packs I've released have been successful. My first pack (Sheep Pack) was released when I was.... 17? Possibly still 16 too and it got around 200k downloads until I discontinued it. Still, I think those textures back then SUCKED so I really prefer not to think of that pack or my other pack (Nagareru). I hate them both now.
19 now and Pixel Perfection is going strong, if anything it's getting more popular now since it's second on the overall curse texture pack list now and the monthly downloads keep rising...
I think most older people making the more popular packs have more experience with texturing and art in general than the young 'uns which is why they're generally more successful. Makes sense to me!
EDIT: Interesting... I think Glim and Syc are the two oldest folks texturing here. No offence of course, guys! You have wisdom in your comparatively old age!
It seems so weird, I thought I was so young, but at 19 I sorta feel middle-of-the-road o.o ya'll turned out younger than i thought.
(Semi-Offtopic alert!)
One thing I've learned is never underestimate someone based on their age.
Being young (or old) is meaningless. Of course the younger you are the more of a predisposition you have to being immature, but I'm surprised at how many people I've bumped into that are under 18, who can have a deep philosophical conversation on hard topics like ethics, religion and politics, without just parroting back whatever <stupid friend> or <ignorant parents> tell them with no idea what they're really talking about. All the while somewhere else there's some 55 year old guy who claims "The youngins should respect his wisdom" ranting his narrow-minded points of view.
So really, age is just a number. Experience(age) does bring wisdom and maturity, but wisdom can be obtained much younger is you retain an open mind and make the effort to learn. On the flipside, the more seriously narrowminded people never obtain a lick of wisdom, so they die at their old age of 90, going on 13 never having actually learned a single thing.
Whats great, are those young people who can already think and act like adults (and to my standard even, and my standards of an adult are really high). They'll make good socially progressive adults in the future, hopefully.
That's not old! At coming up to my half-century, I must be grandma, then! I've just finished a texture pack, but I just post it on my own site. I'm better known in the Elder Scrolls modding community.
I'm rockin' it at 15, haha. I've yet to actually release my resource pack - Mist - but I've been working on this thing since I was late-13/early-14, and I can definitely see how I've improved over time. Obviously, I got into texturing because I've been exposed to art and have been, in my own right, an artist since a very early age.
I grew up with a pencil in my hand, the graphite etching a myriad of designs and scribbles and insignias across many a piece of printer paper. For as long as I can remember, my parents have always encouraged creativity and individuality. Hence forth,I expressed myself through drawing - always. Just recently, actually, I found a tattered and torn journal in the dark depths of my closet, and in it were all sorts of drawings from when I was a child - it made me tear up seeing how far I've come from simple sketches. (Sidenote: The drawings I found were all Zelda-themed drawings; one labled "Mastur Sord," another "Hilin Sheld," etc. I guess I've been a Zelda junkie my whole life, also. ^_^).
Also, when I was younger I enjoyed playing with LEGOs. In fact, I still even have my great big bins, stacked high with LEGO pieces beyond any child's wildest dreams. What I'm trying to get at is - I've always just been a really creative person, I feel. I'm not entirely sure if that makes my texturing skills on-par with, as this thread is referring to as, "popular, adult-made packs," but I do feel like my creativity and art skills have carried over knowledge into texture-making, for sure.
So, here I sit now; at my computer, working relentlessly on textures until i feel they look just right. In fact, I'm working on very special textures that'll be put to heavy use VERY soon... hehehehe, I has secrets to share with y'all. You'll just have to wait, though. >:3
TL;DR - I'm 15, and I've been surrounded by art my whole life. That makes me feel like, despite my age, my texturing work is still pretty good IMO.
...second on the overall curse texture pack list...
mm, I'm guessing that will be third in a few days when the polish MelinaGier faction server pack will pass it with its 1k per day downloads xD Goes to show how pack popularity or anything else in the world is not about quality but rather marketing. Of course when you are at the top you have to maintain your spot with quality, else you will end up like budweiser

I somehow seriously doubt even the largest of servers could maintain 1k/day download rates. I mean, 1,000 people a day and maintain it? That server would have to have a player base of around 50,000+ with (taking a very optimistic count of redownloaders) of about 500+ new players a day.
Keep in mind, that pack you're referring to was just launched this month, so it's probably going to just have a surge of traffic and then very quickly fall off the list once the majority of the players have the pack.

Keep in mind it's also the exact same pack that previously got banned for using downloader programs to boost its numbers and farm for Curse Points. I haven't reported it since it has an actual name this time, and an actual server behind it, so I'm waiting to see how crazy it gets. I'm guessing it's still bot-farm though.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. But I wasn't completely sure..
The numbers, even for a huge server, seem completely insane.. over 12k downloads in 11 days? It seems very unrealistic. But I gave it the benefit of the doubt that maybe it's just a huge server and an initial spike of downloads. Some of those overseas servers get insanely huge.
Uugh, I HATE it when people make that same mistake. Lego is a brand name, not a singular object. Say 'Lego bricks', or 'Lego pieces'...or even just 'Lego'. Not Legos.
Also, it doesn't have to be all caps. It doesn't have to look like the logo. You don't see people calling Minecraft 'MINECRAFT'.
Yeah, I was thinking about that too. But I wasn't completely sure..

I hope it is just a large spike before dropping off... I don't want to lose my spot! :c
I really dislike how these packs for popular servers have less than 20% or something of the textures actually changed and then get an exorbitantly large amount of downloads in a small time. Makes all the effort put into my pack feel a little less worth it, even though I do just texture for fun...

hah, yeah. That sometimes bothers me too.
Although I have other pet peeves, like how players with enough exposure before-hand can make a crappy pack popular just by having the sheer viewing power. *cough oCd cough*. I think that actually bothers me more than server packs. At least with server packs you can argue they are just doing it to make sure their player base has mod support or some of the tweaks in mind. But when a bucketfill pack is "popular" just because of it's massive exposure, it's quite unnerving.
But; that server pack just hit 5th place, and it's basically tied for 4th.. I really question if it's legit now. I just don't see how any server, even a huge one, could possibly have *that* much traffic?
After some poking around, I found their forums.. based on their forum traffic alone, I suspect it's stats are made up. http://www.melina-gier.pl/Bronie/forum/
. . .and at the top, it shows player traffic. They currently have 41 players online on one of their 5 servers (3 are minecraft).. it would take a lot more than a 40~ average to amount to over 1,000 downloads a day.
Something just isn't right! Either I am on the wrong site or they're using bots to pad stats for reward points.

If I ever get a channel off the ground will you hate me when "Sanity" gets super-popular?

My guess would be bots. Like I said, same pack that got banned last time. At the very least I think it should be reported with the information we've gathered, and a suggestion that the webmaster check the traffic legitimacy.

Yes, how dare you become popular!!
If your's got popular, it would deserve it. oCd just drives me nuts, it's all 2-3 color textures, no shading, no real skill. It's just a bunch of basic shapes. I could probably remake an oCd-clone pack in about a week if I tried. :/

I literally just tossed a PM over to the curse people right before I came back to this thread here and saw your reply.
(I forgot to mention that it was the same pack as last time though, doh!)
- The pack is pushing 1k/downloads a day
- I googled the title, thinking it may be a server pack, and found this website. If that is the website for this pack, there's no way they could generate that kind of traffic: http://www.melina-gier.pl/Bronie/forum/
- The feature image server address isn't the same as the server name in the title.
So, I wonder if it's just there using bots to pad the download count and collect curse reward points? I can't say for certainty it's fake, but something isn't adding up. If it's a server pack, the server would have to have an absolutely massive player base to reach 1,000 downloads a day and maintain it. If it's not a server pack, the pack itself is junk and could not possibly become so popular in only 13 days.

A grandma who textures Minecraft and mods Skyrim? You win the internet.
Ahhh well that's awesome. Haven't heard of many around my age let alone beyond on here
Ha yes indeed Steel, I bow to AlienSlof <----- Not a very grandmar'y user name!
