It does and its already bit of a sea that we all wade through i'm just saying that it could be doubly messy, with just "ooh i edited the sound files" default packs popping up there and everywhere......so what happens to those packs.......another forum with "sounds edits only"
In games sounds can be made easily........quality in game sounds with decent sample rates, and recordings, well that means you need to have a fairly good audio setup/studio etc
Yeah, I don't see many quality sound packs happening. My guess is 95% of the sound packs will be "<Gamename> Sound Effect Packs!" and what not taken from other popular games with like-sounds. Personally even if I did have the talent to do sounds I probably wouldn't change them, it's confusing (..and sometimes annoying) for players to learn new sounds. The only thing I'm considering doing is toning down the volume of rain and the zombie door smash sound, that's about it.

Maybe license some jukebox sounds?
And program the jukebox to repeat!
Uh-oh, something just occurred to me... What if some hacker person made a resource pack that reprogrammed minecraft to steal personal information/break your computer? Most people already know to be careful of not well known mods on a not well known website, but what about a "harmless" texture pack?
I think that by the time these are released, people will know that the packs can contain code, and they will be a little more careful. Anyways, that danger is already present, and it doesn't seem to phase people.
If this does happen, I will probably start work on coding my own version of MCPatcher's features I need so my pack can be completely independent. In fact, I'll probably release my MCPatcher-like resource pack to the public for *anyone* to use internally to their pack, because if we go this route, thats how it should be.
Although I would hope the authors of MCPatcher allow us to just drop their files into our packs with the understanding that we will give them direct credit everywhere due. If they don't I'll just have to write my own code and release it, the community needs a MCPatcher-like mod that can be directly installed in the texture pack if that's going to be allowed now. Screw "fame and fortune", it's something we all need and I'll happily attempt to provide it if MCPatcher won't.
Go for it! if it could be open source, then it could be VERY powerful if add ons could be implemented by others? The ultimate "in pack" texture utility. No point more than one tool that does a similar job.

You... you mean a default-edit sound pack?
hahaha, I guess that would be a default edit. *shamed*

I actually hope MCPatcher's author takes that route, because it would be silly to have to rewrite everything from scratch just to provide it to the public when someone else could do it at a drop of a hat just by giving permission. :P.
But I guess we'll see. I know java programming pretty well, but I've never fiddled with MC's code so it'll be very interesting.

Your quite right, most samples are going to be ripped from games and just will be out of place and not needed for most packs. The guys doing the really creative/surreal packs like Steam punk, space themes etc........well they could have a field day, if its done well
Actually Ray, how about a sound utility that assigns a sample to ANY block, with distance triggers..........the hum of redstone as you approach it, the crackling of a torch in the caves as you draw nearer i can think of a ton of things. The immersion levels would go right up (if done right) sound brings so much atmosphere.
My Java coding is basic but my team are pretty S*** hot. I'm a big sucker for sound immersion and the possibilities with the resource packs is really opening up the fun.

Agreed, however it's not happened so far. Maybe this will change the modding scene and its closed net of coders?
Used the unreal and unity engines quite a bit, there are some nice effects that could be taken from those !

oh, I love that sound idea. I'd love to add extra sounds on top of the existing ones. In fact, now that you mention that, there's was an immersion mod made a long time ago that added some spectacular sounds to the game.
It would be wonderful if someday in the future we could actually get a whole team together to match (and surpass) MCPatcher's features in a modular mod pack people could plug and play directly into their texture packs.. only taking what they need. For example, there could be moduals for "Extra Sounds", "Random Mobs", "CTM" and so on and so forth. Texture packers would only take what they need, so they don't get a lot of useless fluff. That would be for another discussion down the road though I guess.
Kinda crappy video, but I found the environmental sounds mod I was talking about. Sounds a lot like what you mentioned. I would love this to be part of a texture pack.

This occurred to me as well. I'm wondering if this isn't part of the reorganization of Minecraft, having a system that identifies what's actually in a resource pack and labels it accordingly. If there's code it'll designate it as a mod rather than a texture pack for exactly this reason. I'd hope this will be the case, anyway. If not... uh... maybe someone should pose this to Dinnerbone on the Reddit.
Actually, there's nothing really stopping people from doing this with mods NOW. It's always been the case that trust is a big part of getting mods. There's absolutely nothing stopping someone from making a fun and interesting mod that grabs people's attention, and simply failing to mention the part about how it downloads a bit of malware that steels your credit card numbers in the background while you're distracted with how fun your new mod is.
It's not brought up much anymore, but back in Beta this was actually a bit of a concern with people watching their allowed connections after every new mod install just to make sure the mod isn't contacting anyone shady. I still shy away from mods that offer to check for updates, for this reason alone. Now people just assume that if a mod isn't total crap and has pictures on the thread that the modder must be on the up-and-up and that it's OK to install their unsigned code on your system without a second thought.

I've been mulling it over a bit, and maybe mojang could make the code seperate from the client, if it isn't already. I mean that the launcher, which updates and installs the code files, could maybe partition the code files, like minecraft.jar, to make it so it is purely internal to the launcher.

YESYESYESYESYES. I have always wished that minecraft had a bit more life to it, and this might be the way to do it!
Birdsong near leaf blocks?

Okay i may be getting on in my years but that just made me grin like a little kid with a new toy or VERY big bag of sweets/candy
Some of it was a little full on and imo can loose the charm of the world being so intense but oh my!
I think that by the time these are released, people will know that the packs can contain code, and they will be a little more careful. Anyways, that danger is already present, and it doesn't seem to phase people.
Look at this forum.
Seriously, go and look at it.
....
Now look me in the proverbial eye and tell me - Do you genuinely believe that those people will be careful?
I'm going to be plenty annoyed if those resource packs include sounds. I always mute the game right away, and even if a pack promised me to have some good sounds to replace the current awful ones, I wouldn't try it.
Why? Because the damage was done, AND muting the game causes it to run faster. I'm sure fancy custom sounds will add to the general FPS problem that MC has. Now I'll have to rip out the sound files to have my quiet
The malware part is why I resent all custom clients and self-updating mods of any kind.
I wasn't thrilled about this stuff before, and now after reading this thread, I already resent this resource pack business.
I'm perfectly happy with mods and texture pack being separate, thank you very much.

Oh and YES modules you can pick and choose
Maybe in the future depending on how MCPatcher/optifine handle this, and how this new API/Resource pack goes we should assemble a team for this task. I think it'll be a very fun/rewarding experience.
For now though we're kinda stuck, since we have no idea what exactly is happening. We might all find out the resource pack stuff is no where near as flexable as we think it will be.
Wait, does this mean that servers can have server resource packs instead of server texture packs? That means that servers that require mod packs will become much easier to run.

We don't know yet.
But yeah, that would make it more convenient. Garry's Mod has a system like that in place.

Dinnerbone mentioned that Resource Packs could, potentially, be made to be auto-updating. I see no reason why having a server direct the client to download resource packs couldn't also be a thing.
The idea of resource packs auto-updating seems awesome... yet bad. I don't want to log onto minecraft and suddenly have 10-20 resource packs all trying to update. I'd rather just have an update button.

I'm not sure how it will work. Dinnerbone also didn't say that it was definitely going to happen, just that it would be possible. I imagine that it'll be optional, or will require that you set something up with your download service. That is, those of us who use free hosting will probably not be able to use it, but big mods like Forge that have their own websites probably could.
Hopefully it'll ask before it downloads a load of stuff.
