So i am making a texture pack and i want the zombie too have two different textures. I know that is is possible cause i have seen it done before. So if someone knows how to do it can you please tell me.
thank
Very easy, you will need either MC patcher or Optifine as they both have the random mob feature.
Create two sets of textures and put a number 2 at the end of the file name of the second texture set i.e zombie.png zombie2.png. If you decide to add more zombies just add another number each time.
Add both to your texture packs mob directory and make sure Random mobs is ticked in MCpatcher or in Optifine go to Video settings/quality and turn on the random mobs setting
Hope that helps, its one of the easiest advanced features to use.

(Assuming this is still possible) If I made multiple wolf textures and their corresponding tamed wolf/aggressive wolf textures, would optifine use them correctly?
Make sure in your texture pack you have the first texture saved where it goes (eg. assets > minecraft > textures > entity > cow > cow.png) and then save the rest in assets > minecraft > mcpatcher > mob > cow > cow2.png(and cow3, cow4, etc.) Hope I helped!

The answer to my question is... Yes! In the end I decided to do it how it is with the cats where the untamed only has one texture and tamed has multiple, but it does turn wolf2 into wolf_tame2 rather than choosing randomly. The only flaw I saw with optifine is that when you breed them the baby wolf has a randomly selected texture instead of being one of the adult textures Does this happen with mcpatcher?
The issue with random textures is it is 100% random. It will switch what texture everything has each time it loads. There is no way to assign something to always use one texture every time. Pretty much, every time you load the mob again, from saving and exiting, traveling worlds, or leaving the area and coming back its a flick of a dice what texture that mob will now have.
So you cant tame a black wolf and keep it back, it'll switch next time you load it, nor will the pups be the same texture, it will always be random.

Actually, from personal experience (at least with optifine) the only time the textures reset is when you change texture packs. The only issue is when breeding 2 black dogs, for example, you can get an orange dog.

all the secondary textures should be placed under a folder called mcpatcher with the containing folders corresponding to the other folder. For more information, you should be able to look on Google.
