Hi all :smile.gif: i was just curious... If anyone know what comp do i need to run 256x256 textures? if you got specs for others i would appriciate it also, or if its easyer, help me out by tellin me what pack i should run on my comp :smile.gif:
Intel core2duo 2.2ghz
geforce 9500gt (1024 mb)
3 gigs of ddr2
sata 2 hdd
I can run 128x texture packs, but it seems to eat up a lot of RAM and gets pretty choppy.
Just by looking at the amount of system and gpu memory you have, you may be able to run 128x packs well, but you may lack raw hardware power to reliably run 256x.
Just install a pack and see how it runs. Shouldn't take up more than a few minutes of your time. For a 128x pack, try bordercraft
the 256x are definetly not for my comp ^.^ maybe in the future when i get a new one, for now ill stick to 128x
The bordercraft ones look nice, but I like the Photo realistic ones more :smile.gif: . So if anyone has a comp similar to mine you should be able to run 128x with no problems at all ^.^ and they look terribly amazing :biggrin.gif:

hey what pack is that? also just so people know here are my system specs and it runs 256x256 great
CPU - i7 2700k 3.5GHz (turbo 3.9GHz)
Video card - geforce 550 ti (1024 GB)
RAM - 8GB DDR3 (set minecraft to use a max of 3GB)
HDD - 3TB SATA 2
Well, I've been told my texture pack works great and runs smooth with 256x and 128x versions (link in signature, it's a photo-realism pack).
I can run 256 no problems and here are my specs :
Windows 32bit
CPU - AMD Phenom x4 9650 @ 2300MHz
Video Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460
Ram - 6gb - However since I am on 32 bit it only reads 4gb
HDD - A laughable Western Digital 250gb
Texture pack size has little or no effect on the overall performance of Minecraft barring two things: Dedicated graphics card and available texture memory. Personally I'm using a now 5y/o ASUS M4A79 Deluxe workstation/desktop motherboard which comes with about 3GB of shared video memory and I have another 1.28GB on my 560ti on top of that. Texture memory usage that goes beyond your available is sent to your system RAM and makes the video extremely choppy and even unplayable in some cases. Depending on the resolution you intend to run Minecraft at as well as the view distance you want, you could expect no more than 2GB VRAM usage on a 256x256 texture pack. I will also attest to shared VRAM on the motherboard, while far faster than allocating to system RAM, is always slower than dedicated GPU VRAM. So even I notice a small performance hit using 256x256 with far view and 1080p resolution. Yes, those new 2GB graphics cards that just launched this year look very nice right about now aye? Honestly an HD7850 or GTX660 or their respective betters will do anyone just fine.
As far as the rest of system specs go, the texture pack size has little effect on how much system RAM the game uses. Say by default the game uses 256MB system RAM and you add a Texture Pack that is about 100MB in size. Then you could expect your system RAM usage to increase by the same 100MB estimated, unless your VRAM is being overfilled. This factor applies to modding as well since that's the major source of system RAM usage in Minecraft, often jumping the game up to 2 and even 3GB of RAM needed.
All of you idiots. Minecraft needs hardly any RAM. it needs VRAM. A good video card, which means, running higher resoulution texture packs, that get the card running, gives you better FPS. it sounds opposite, i know, but it works.
If you need a video card to play it smoothly it doesn't really matter how much vram your card has, its about the actual GPU doing the work. As long its a good quality one, minecraft should run flawlessly. My PC runs both 128 and 256 at a smooth 60FPS (v sync), minecraft is currently using about 2gb of ram.
Specs:
Core I7 870 @ 2.93 GHz

NVIDIA GTX 460
Windows 7 64bit

I agree, also a CPU with a high clock speed is needed because minecraft only uses 1 core unless you use optifine to change that.

I have the same specs, except I have the i5 2500k and a 500GB WDC Blue HDD. But for some reason, Whenever I install a 256 x 256 Texture Pack, when I click on it, nothing happens. I think it may be because my Monitor doesn't have a wide enough screen, or it doesn't have a good enough pixelation, but maybe not.

The texture pack would be affinity HD in its early stage of development x) Link in my description
thanks, downloading now, i've been using the LB photorealism texture but i really like the way the torch looks in this one from the pic you posted
