It would be that as soon as I'm happy with my leather armor texture, Mojang would change it so that they would be dye-able and the colors are hardcoded in, making my current leather armor texture ugly as sin unless I change it to suit the new dyeing. And I did, and it still looks not great.
From what I understand cloth_1.png/cloth_2.png are supposed to be greyscaled (but the color is hardcoded to be brown anyhow) and cloth_1_b.png/cloth_2_b_.png are the textures you want to remain undyed.
In the last picture, where I'm invisible (I was testing stuff lol), I greyscaled cloth 1 and cloth 2 and overlaid what I didn't want dyed in cloth 1 b and cloth 2 b (the chain mail, the white shirt, pants and the belt and baldric). You can see my texture uses a lot of brown, since it's based on the Hero's Clothes from Legend of Zelda, and with the new dyeing, my undyed leather armor is brown on brown on brown.
My question is: what does everyone else as a texture artist intend to do about the new leather armor? To be frank, I don't think the new way allows for much creativity when it comes to the undyed leather.
I really am frustrated that Mojand has decided to have dyed leather, it is soooooo pointless!
You really think so? I feel that it adds a bit more for the players, say if some guys want to have colored team armor on a server or just want to look a bit flashy then they now have the choice.

Yes... but still can you see a point orf it outside of multiplayer?

I actually don't mind the new dye-able leather armor; it gives a new use to dyes and leather armor itself, if only as a vanity item sort of like a worse version of gold armor.
What I dislike is how it has been implemented so poorly in regards to texture packs. I like to lurk in the texture pack forum and I've seen my fair share of texture packs; very few make their leather armor just plain brown, there are usually other colors involved and other components that aren't leather per se.
I wish Dinnerbone would add another set of textures to the armor file: cloth_1_c.png/cloth_2_c_.png. Whereas cloth_1.png and cloth_2.png are the greyscaled textures that define what is dyed and cloth_1_b/cloth_2_b.png define what is not dyed, cloth_1_c/cloth_2_c would be what the undyed, original armor looks like so it's the best of both worlds. You get normal looking, undyed leather armor that doesn't look like brown poo and dyed armor as well.

I agree. That, and it only really works if you have a "traditional" brown leather. I made the cows in my texture pack have the stereotypical black and white dairy cow, and made all leather black leather (they are a source of black leather, right?).
Anyways, now that we have the non-recolored layers for both the armor and its icons, if you copy your texture to the non-recolored section, it will look like it used to. If you keep that same texture in the recolored sections, it will look the same for legacy Minecraft. Yay!
Now, all they need to do is fix the bacon particles, and this:
and I'm not mad at them anymore!

I might just try/keep it the way you suggested, but unfortunately that excludes me from dyeing the armor since it just doesn't show up at all which is rather unfortunate.
There should be a way so that you can have dyed armor and normal looking armor.

Well, I notice you do have brown parts on your armor texture. Maybe, you could put all of the non-brown parts of the armor in the non-colored file, and then make the straps/belt/boots in the original file and make them grayscale? That way, it looks like the original, only with dyable parts to it as well. But, this texture will no longer look right in Legacy Minecraft (in fact, you'd get only white/gray boots and straps....)
EDIT: actually, I take that back, just make sure to always include the pre-colored texture that you include in the non-recolored file in the recolored file. You won't see it recolored, as it will be overwritten anyways. It'll just look a little less bad in legacy Minecraft, as it won't have missing sections.

For the medieval pack I am making, pants are sort of a leather coat, which can be dyed. The belt stays the same. On the torso, a tunic. Helmet will have a coloured band and the boots will have stockings.
In your situation, I'd have a few dye-able parts, or increase the contrast on the brown parts.

Medieval builder and texture artists. Also totally awesome.

What I did was I allowed the green shirt/hat and a stripe along the side of the pants and a stripe along the boots to show up as dyed. I already have a few dyed parts set up. I left the belt/baldric and pants as undyed.
My issue is my original undyed armor looks terrible,my undyed armor is all brown. I want my undyed armor to look like the what I have in the first picture but still allow dyeing, the way it is set up now I can't have it both ways; I don't like how the brown was hardcoded in/how we have to greyscale the original textures is what I'm saying.
Just wondering here if anyone can help me. I want to remove the brown overlays altogether, but just deleting the cloth_armor_b stuff messes up leather armour completely. I was wondering what I should do? The reason I am doing this is I am trying to change John Smith texture pack to update it to 1.4.4 and the overlays are horrible 16px on the 32px armour. Any help would be vastly appreciated.
If you delete cloth_1_b and cloth_2_b, I believe the game will just replace the overlays with the default overlays. From what I gather you don't want the undyed overlays at all? Have you tried just having a blank cloth_1_b and cloth_2_b? I believe that'll do the trick.
