I'm setting up a test live stream presently. When it's up I'll link it here.
Edit: It's up now. Could someone please confirm they can see me?
Live stream over, but it will always be at this channel. Please add it to the OP, Mopy. :smile.gif: http://livestream.com/rulyon
You have been added to the channels list!
I was thinking it would be cool if someone wanted to do a Q&A livestream for new texture artists. I'm thinking we can break it up into three parts (beginners, intermediate, and advanced). It can be scheduled ahead of time, and maybe we can even have a sign up to ensure that the texture artist who is volunteering wouldn't be wasting their time. I guess I'm envisioning a walk through on how to do things then the viewers can ask questions to get more detailed answers. I dunno this idea just came to me, so let me know if you're interested in either running or watching a livestream like this.
I wouldn't mind running a Q&A live stream. :)I certainly don't know everything there is to know about it, so it would have to be beginner or intermediate, most likely.I wouldn't mind running a Q&A live stream. :)I certainly don't know everything there is to know about it, so it would have to be beginner or intermediate, most likely.

If this was done it would be best to also host a voice chat via skype or something. That's how I was able to have two people talking during my livestream. That way we could have more than one artist doing the Q&A.

Yup! I think this would probably be the best way of doing this. Two heads are better than one after all!
So about the Q&A, I say we recruit people for the stream first. Then schedule a week in advance. That will give us time to advertise on our respective threads and in areas were we would not be violating forum decorum by doing so. We should do a 3 hour broadcast. The first hour for beginners, the second for intermediate and so on. I would be willing to stay on for all three hours.
I think that there should be a max of four artists broadcasting at any one time. More than that and it would get chaotic.
It might also be a good idea to do this type of thing regularly, who know, maybe we could get sponsored.

Each tutorial session will be approximately three hours, and will be scheduled at least a week in advance. The session will be broken up into three parts: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each session will start out with some basic information and tutorials. The viewers will then have the opportunity to ask questions in real time, which is a huge benefit to watching a livestream tutorial rather than a prerecorded one.
Who will host the Q&A?
There will be two to three texture artists running each session. One of the artists will host the session and provide the video for the livestream. The other artists will be on skype, with the main host, so the viewers will be able to hear their voices as well.
What information will be covered in each part?
We are still working this out. We have a very basic start, but if you have any ideas or feedback, please join the discussion. What follows is an outline of some ideas we've had.
Beginner
1. Where do I get the files for creating a texture pack?
~ This will cover how to extract the files from the game to create a texture pack, and how to put them back into the game.
**I'm not sure if this is really needed, because I think most beginners get at least that far.**
2. Starting Your Texture Pack.
~ This will discuss the terrain.png (what textures are what, what you can/can't edit, etc.)
~ This will also discuss basic drawing techniques.
3. Tiling.
~ Pretty self explanatory, but tiling will be covered during each part because of it's importance in creating a good texture pack.
4. Forum Tips and Etiquette.
~ Just a little blurb about what you should and should not do on the forum regarding texture packs, and how it may affect other's interest in your texture pack.
Intermediate
1. What else can I change in my texture pack?
~ This will go into the other files in the texture pack, what they do, and how to change them.
~ The gui files will most likely be discussed here.
2. Intermediate Textures
~ Grass and foliage color will likely be discussed here.
3. Getting Your Pack Out There
~ Possibly a good place to discuss how to make a decent looking thread for your texture pack.
Advanced
1. Animations
~ Will cover animations, and patches.
2. Making a Good HD Pack
~ Possibly a good place to talk about HD texturing in general
3. Armor creation and Mob Skinning
~ Will cover mob and armor templates.
**Again, these are very rough ideas. Please let us know what could be added or what should be changed.**
About tiling for the Q&A. Not sure if many know this, but if you scale up a texture to the next size use noise an motion blur, then put the middle of the upscaled texture as the normal size texture, it normaly tiles quite well.
Would you be interested in hosting? I think the idea is to do these sessions every so often, and it'd be nice to increase the pool of artists willing to help :smile.gif:
Considering what you have in advance it might be a good place for me. Even though I don't consider myself advanced. I have experience in animating (outside minecraft and in). Because of my work with 3d programs I understand UV mapping and all my packs are HD.

I was already assuming you'd take the advanced stuff :wink.gif:. I'm sure I forgot about a lot of other things that could go under advanced, so if you think of anything else let me know.
I'm streaming right now, but i'm not working on my textures. I'm jamming to Nightwish music and working on the character class I'm creating for Pathfinder D&D. :smile.gif:
My Livestream is up if anyone is interested. I don't know how long I'll be texturing though!

We could have as many artists as we want really. I think more than three or four per level would be too much though.
I am going to be doing a livestream here in a few if anyone want to watch me **** around with the pack for Steel's challange.
