Because it's the only thing that keeps me sane, duh.
Well, no. I do it because I have fun with it. I've been using photoshop in varying capacities since I was 6 years old. I decided to start creating texture packs in order to get better at pixel art. I do enjoy it, and it keeps me occupied on otherwise boring days.
Although, some of the items in the items.png have caused me to bash my head against walls in frustration.
lol sounds legit. And the hardest thing to texturein items is armor...i can never get it to look qiite right.
I'm currently working on my first pack (16x), and so far i have found wool really annoying because I have to get each type of wool color just right and so it doesn't conflict with the others. For example: Light Grey and Grey, or Green and Cactus Green.

use the color dropper tool, then use that shade with some additions(stiching etc) and boom, insta wool

Tip I found out in Photoshop the other day while doing sprites for my mod:
Open the "items.png" file. select a dye color by using the Rectangular marquee tool. Ctrl(Cmd)-C. Create a new file, 16x16, name doesn't matter. Ctrl(Cmd)-V.
Go to your texture. Select the appropriately-colored wool texture (or where it should be) with the marquee tool. Go to image>Adjustments>match color. In the image statistics section, click the box under "source". select the 16x16 image file. play with the settings to fine-tune the color. click OK.

Do you have directions for Gimp 2.8, I use Gimp not Photoshop.
I have fun messing with the HUD, on just about anything, feels like there's so much you can do @w@
Where as things like wheat, there isn't much. It's wheat, you have to make it look like wheat, and I just can't do that.
I'm a huge fan of Fireworks, I use it for every pixel/sprite job and any .gif I make I use Fireworks. I love it. <3

Well, you don't HAVE to.
Santiago didn't. My apologies if this counts as advertising.

I'll be releasing an update of my texture pack as soon as I figure out how to put the files I am working on in my texture pack folder. Can anyone help?
Not really, unless you're going for something realistic-y. You have the freedom to choose what to make it, it's creativity!
I'm doing a theme'd texture pack. If you care to visit my threat. .//w//.
So, I have to make the object fit the theme. If it's going to be wheat, it's going to need to be wheat, since ya know. It needs to be turned into bread.
Only problem, most of us don't use Photoshop because it costs money D:
I used to use gimp, but going from Photoshop CS5 Extended to Gimp is like trading in a '12 Porche for an '82 Reliant. (Gimp does not play nicely with Snow Leopard or my workflow)
What you are looking for is a color replacement/match tool. I can't imagine why gimp wouldn't have this in some form or another.
I also think it is quite likely that you can find older versions of PS Elements for very reasonable prices (30$ or less). If you plan to do a lot of image editing, it will work wonderfully.
CTRL-E exporting/CTRL-S saving. I like being able to tap both and have both saved. It basically just split one function into two with two different hotkeys, which ends up being much faster.
Don't forget that wonderful single window mode! I adore single window mode.
I guess it is about what you prefer. I haven't played around with single window mode, I might do that tonight.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
The official Bluebird continuation is underway! Please come and help keep the pack alive!
My god, logs. I've never been able to get a good log texture. I probably approach it wrongly; I try and make vertical lines and go from then.
Any tips? (Fishy, I know you like them. Help D:)
We have to make him a texture-loving texturer!
don't expect me to be on much.

Don't get the new version, it sucks. It takes a lot longer to save and stuff.

I might help you later when/if I have time.
New most hated thing to texture, ever.
