I honestly think Minecraft looks better without higher resolution texture packs. High-res stuff kind of goes against the whole blocky feel of the game to me, I guess.
Honestly, a lot of hi-res packs don't look too good because their tiling is horrible (getting a larger texture to tile well is very hard) and because of the mip-mapping issue mentioned above. Still, there are plenty of really good hi-res packs out there.
Personally I like 32x the best, but that's personal preference. I just feel that most higher-res textures, good as they may be, just look like really good paintings plastered onto a cube. Lower-res packs don't have that effect for me.
It's iffy for me. I personally think most packs above 32x are horrid, but there are some exceptions, such as Ovo's Rustic Pack, LB's Photo Realism, etc. It really just depends on what style the pack is going for, and how well they pull it off.
One thing I REALLY hate though, are HD packs that are basically single colors with noise and filters over them.
I changed the poll. Also, I'm sorry if this has been done millions of times, I used the search function at the top ("high resolution texture packs look") and nothing of interest came up. Maybe we should invest in a better search bar.
It's not asking if the textures are good, LB Photo Realism has great textures, but this poll is preference on what you think looks better. I'm not sure how to really describe it.
In my opinion, anything over 32x starts to get rid of the style of minecraft. The pixel-y textures is something I love about it. I don't like HD. It just doesn't fit in right to me.
I have used a 64*64 pureBDCraft texture pack for over a month now. The only reason why is because it looks good to me. it obviously depends on the person him/her self if they like a texture pack or not. although i do agree with the "blocky-feel argument" Minecraft does have a certain aesthetic associated with it which is why i'm not a big fan of those "photo realistic" packs. they completely ruin the game for me. the only reason i would ever use them is if there was a mod for realistic terrain smoothing (someone get on that right now BTW) otherwise it would be a visual hypocrisy. you really can't have a 256*256 texture with the smallest unit of terrain being 1 meter^3.
I used to think that, but I find highly stylized or minimalist hi-res packs can really make minecraft look truely amazing. I don't think realism works too well just because of the nature of minecraft, but if you can make a painterly pack that actually LOOKS painted with a hi-res pack, more power to ya.
I'm going to assume that that is sarcasm?

P.S. This will be my only post here so flaming me won't really accomplish anything.

This.
