Expanded the technical side to include some of the oddities with the terrain.png. I will further expand it to cover things like biome shading, clouds and animated water/fire/lava.
I like the idea of a biome shading/fire animation tutorial. I always manage to f*** up the biome colors, so I tend to just stick with default. XP
I am stuck in a predicament. 1.Code a site for the TPU where there will be a database of all the tuts plus a submission form for submitting more. Also maybe a little forum for help and issues on these guides. Just a thought. 2.Spend the majority of my time making my pack. 3.I dunno, Bump?

The name's Hyp, and I am trying to become a better artist!.
nice collection of tutorials. I doubt many people will notice,(Must Read anyone?) but it's great to have another resource for beginners. I would have LOVED this when I started my first pack.
for a long time i want to make a texture pack because in every TP I download there is something that i dont like :/ but i dont/didnt how to make one xD
Just a question: is there any tool or something like that to make the shadows? this is one of my BIG problems lol
Well, when I start in on the artistic side of my tutorial I will cover that, but I can answer your question now.
My technique for lighting is to use a brush with soft edges (as soft as possible) and then to select either pure white (for highlights) or pure black (for shadows). I then put the brush at about 15-30% opacity, depending on what the base color is for the thing I am shading. The lighter the base color the higher the highlights will need to be and the lower the shading.
By the way, I use photoshop so I have no idea if this will translate into GIMP or Paint.net

I don't know how much it will help you, but I like to save a lot of random patterns and snippets of textures as brushes for shading. you can get some really cool effects that way. also with the gimp and pdn (ps too?) with the right plugins you can do a lot of shading effects very quickly.

Water and Lava animation too, I'm scared to even try that ;_;

A GUI one would be helpful, I'm stumped on my item hotbar.
