I'm currently working on a x512 pack. With optimine/optifog I'm able to get 40-50FPS on my 3 year old LAPTOP. There really is no need to have a super computer. Just know how to allocate memory to Java and use optimine.
There is a significant difference between x512 and x256. The clarity on the x512 is simply astounding and jagged edges are heavily refined where items may actually look smooth instead of saw-like.
I've been able to mess around and run resolutions up to x768. I'm sure the game can support higher, I'm just out of memory. 4GB of RAM only goes so far. =S
My computer gets 416 FPS when running a HD texture pack. And then it crashes when I run terraria >.<
Just rape over 32x packs, what's wrong with you people liking oversized HD textures
Minecraft was supposed to be 16x
Minecraft began being developed by 1 man: Notch.
Notch is not an graphical artist, and it is hard to do pixel art with high resolutions, but is the easiest to give detail without a steady hand.
Then when minecraft got famous the pixelated graphics stood with it, so the new artist couldn't really let it go.
The big limit is the size of a single texture sheet that graphics cards support. Since the entire terrain.png is loaded in as one texture the max size any single tile in it can be is 256 given current hardware limits.
no, there are fully successful 512x texture packs already!
Example: Sphax 512x
however, only people with like $20,000 Alienwares can use them (exxageration, but the comp needs to be high end)
however, a 1024x texture pack would most likely crash every computer known to man
Seriously guys? So many video games right now use texture resolutions like 2048x, 4096x, and 8192x. So quit saying you won't tell the difference between a 1024 and a 512, because you will. The maximum texture cache of the Wii is 1024x, and that's the least powerful 7th gen console!

Net_Bastard's Epic Low-res! As much awesomeness that you can cram into a 5x5 texture pack, and then some!
I can run 512x at 120fps. It's very possible. 512x looks more detailed than 256x. I don't think 1024x is possible to run due to java limits. I can only get 1-2fps on 1024x with 1GB VRAM(I have 8GB RAM). Maybe somebody with GTX 580 3GB VRAM can run it better.
I like my grass to look like grass, not green blocks.
This in no way means if you like green blocks, we can never be friends.
I also put ketchup on things other folks might not.....
Notch wrote the game in low res for his own reasons, but enabled creative folks to modify it to their liking without changing the original idea; which is a sandbox where almost anything is possible.
While everyone has an opinion( and we all know what opinions are like...) on this issue we are free to do what we want with the game. This is the main reason for selling 31 flavors of ice cream... not everyone likes vanilla.
