When you're editing the textures, every tile is a 16 x 16 pixel area. Usually these are obvious i.e. The rock tile. Some times these are smaller than the available 16 x 16 area for each tile i.e. the cactus core doesn;'t go all the way to the edge. This leaves room for needles to stick out.
In gerneral, replace existing pixels with your own. But you can choose to make a different shape in blocks like the flowers and the ladder and the bamboo anf other tiles that have some transparent pixels. When in doubt, experiment! Try things and load your pack and see what happens. This is the best way to learn how the various tiles behave.
If you make transparent pixels in a full 16x16 tile other than ice or water you will see through this hole into the earth. Probably not what you want. On ice and water you can make them simi-transparent by setting their pixels transparency in your image editor. This allows you to see through them partially. Glass pixels must be fully opaque or fully transparent, no simi-transparency its allowed in the glass block.
I think that covers the basics, if you have specific questions just ask. I'll try to answer as best I can.
I'm having trouble making things transparent. In my paint program, all the transparent bits are black, but then when I modify it, suddenly everything that would be transparent in the game is suddenly solid black. What exactly is the right color for transparency?

What application are you using? Some let you choose the color that will be used for transparency when you save. If your app uses a color rather than actual transparent pixels like photochop does then choose a color that does not occur in your file at all. Usually a vibrant chartreuse or purple.
So, do we turn the texture pack back into a .zip file by compressing the files IN the file, or compressing the file from the OUTSIDE? Thanks in advance! :biggrin.gif:

Compress the files and folders in your texture pack. Not your texture pack top level folder. If your texture pack is only 1 file then, again, compress that one file not it's containing folder.

That used to happen to me, when I used Paint, but now that I used Paint.net I no longer get the black areas. Paint.net download page link is on the first page, first post. Hope I helped :biggrin.gif:
Also, OP(Forgot your name sorry)how do I make a picture link to a thread? Like yours does.
Thanks in advance! :biggrin.gif:

You have a white background behind your torches. Delete the white in your editor. Some editors allow you to define a color to treat as transparent. If you choose white these would disappear, but so would all other white pixels in your file.
Updated the default16pxTexturepack.zip to the Cake release.
tks always wanted to make a texure pack maybe make a guide for MOBs?
I'm making my own texture pack, and so far, it looks like crap! :biggrin.gif:
Great job guide, bodha. Makes things very simple.
here is a dumb question..

I can now test my texture pack on my texture pack testing world thing! xD
