Hi, sorry if there is already a thread about this, but i searched the forum and saw nothing, so I'll go ahead and ask:
Is there any way to actually make custom textures on a mac? I saw a plethora of threads about how to install them, and I know how to do that anyways, but I can't seem to find out how to actually MAKE them. Thanks in advance for any help

What you wanna do is open your minecraft.jar file with a jar opener, copy out the terrain.png file and edit it with your favorite transparency compatible picture editor. (Gimp, Photoshop, etc.) That will change the blocks etc. If you want to change mobs, items, etc. look around in your minecraft.jar folder and you will find em.

While I couldn't find the minecraft.jar file, i do have a texture pack that i am currently using, and I figure that I can duplicate, edit, and install the edited version using the same method. The only problem is, the mod didnt apply to tools and in-game menus, which is what I really hope to change. But that advice really helped, Thanks.
EDIT: cancel that, I found the minecraft.jar file, but I cant find the tools anywhere
What you do is make a folder on your desktop, put your Minceraft app in it, and put your texture pack contents into it. Make sure everything still stays in the respective folders, like don't take the .png's out of the mob folder ect. This only works with 16x16, but it might also work with 32x32.

The Minecraft tools are in items.png in gui folder, the tools for editing the images are on the internet.

Manly blood is both highly acidic AND highly basic, but I'm glad to see you're paying attention.
If you're looking to combine two different packs, all you have to do is unzip them, combine what you like, and rezip them using right click > compress "all that stuff"
If you're looking to create your own textures, you go to minecraft.jar, right click > open with > archive utility. In the folder that is generated, among the classes and whatnot, you will find the default textures which you can edit.
As for tools, I use Photoshop and Pixen. Since Photoshop was a mistake and I never should have bought that Adobe crap, I hear GIMP is good stuff.
Here's what you want to do:
[*:358epajo]Open Users/<Username>/Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin
[*:358epajo]Right-click on minecraft.jar and choose Open With -> Archive Utility.app
[*:358epajo]It will generate a folder called "minecraft". Look inside it.
[*:358epajo]Go back to the first "minecraft" folder (the one inside App Support) and go into the "texturepacks" folder. Create a new folder here. Name the folder anything you want.
[*:358epajo]Inside the folder, create a text file called "pack.txt". Inside the text file, put the description of your texture pack. This will show up in Minecraft.
[*:358epajo]Go back into the "minecraft" folder generated by the JAR file and copy the files needed for the texture pack into the folder you made. You can find the files you can include here. Note that if you don't include one of those elements, Minecraft will use the default instead.
[*:358epajo]Edit the files to your liking with any image editor. I'd recommend Photoshop, but if you don't have that, try GIMP.
[*:358epajo]Now you need to create a ZIP file of your texture pack. This is important. Select all the files in your texture pack folder and right-click them, and then choose Compress Items. Make sure you DON'T JUST SELECT THE FOLDER and compress that. If you do, Minecraft won't read the pack correctly.
[*:358epajo]It'll generate a file called "Archive.zip". Rename this to the name of your texture pack and place it in the "texturepacks" folder.
[*:358epajo]You're good to go! Open Minecraft and select your pack. Then have fun!
