It's been awhile since I've posted under the texture/resource pack categorial. My last botched attempt at a texture pack the auspices of another name was a failure much to my own fault. Thusly I make no promises here.
I have gone through a multitude of consecutive texture packs, and many to no avail. However, from browsing and perusing the wares and resource packs of other creators I have found a few that fit the criterion that I feel matches the work I myself try to do in single player and server multiplayer. Those that didn't fit, failed to work for me for a variety of reasons. Either their graphical style was too disjointed and mismatched to really work, or there was too much contrast even between variations of the same material (Such as between cobble stone and stone brick.) The few that I found appealing, worked because they had a unifying tone, style, or color palette, such as John Smith and Summer Fields, or had a multitude of textures that simply worked well together such as GeroDoku and Dokucraft, or finally had such a level or detail and quality such as Glimmar's Steampunk Resource/Texture pack. These packs worked for a period, but as we all know, John Smith is no longer maintained by the original creator and updates rather slowly, Dokucraft is still a nice choice but doesn't feel appropriate for a steampunk world as it's really more medieval, like John Smith, and Summer Fields is just too happy and bright for a steampunk world.
Which brings me to Other steampunk resource packs, of which to my count there have been three or four to date, though I can't really recall every one of them at the time of this writing. Glimmar's Steampunk Texture/Resource pack by far is laudable, as it truly is a well put together texture pack and deserves all the credit that it gets, however, for my purposes and intents, it's unsuitable, hence this post.
It's unsuitable to me for a few reasons that to me, are adequate reason to create an alternative. Firstly there's a great deal of contrast between a variety of textures, and while that's forgivable in any texture pack, I find it difficult to find texture that are like one another that allow for a structure to really come together, although this contrast does significantly aid in making composite structures and making structures with complimentary color and material schemes. The second reason why I find Glimmar's textures unsuitable for some of my projects, is the design of some of the textures are a bit counter intuitive (depending on which school of though you belong to in the greater scheme of "design vs. function.") A third reason I personally find Glimmar's pack a trifle bit bothersome, is the abundance of "metal" looking textures... which from my perspective on textures... textures must match the material that thy represent. Lastly, in recent months, Glimmar has been shifting towards 64x rather than 32x textures for his resource pack, and though it really makes it come together from a design perspective, it also makes it very graphically intensive and makes the pack slower to render on lower end machines (Sadly, this includes my current workstation.) These and other reasons motivate me to create my own textures and resources.
My current criterion for creating and developing this pack:
Unified color palette - A texture pack really comes together when it has one.
Material-Texture design correlation - A personal choice more than any other.
Gritty grungy - A dark moody and rather sooty look is what I'm aiming for, i.e. like the late 18th or 19th century.
32x textures - Not too graphically intensive but not as simple as Vanilla 16x minecraft textures.
A proclivity of cast iron and brass - I feel in a mine craft world this would be the case.
Other features yet to be determined.
These and other features are on my agenda, although when or if this project I have endeavored upon ever comes to fruition is anybody's guess. Feel free to contribute your own ideas and commentary. Also if anyone wishes to join me on this endeavor feel free to contact me. Otherwise I feel this is a good place to stop for right now until I have more content.
