Hi. I have been playing for awhile. My son taught me, yes I am a mom. I was playing with different texture packs until my mac laptop crashed and had to download everything again. I was using the John Smith texture pack. Is is necessary to have optifine or mcpatcher? I can't seen to download either one. Even if I do, I can't open the file because it says "it doesn't recognize" it. I managed to install it before, now I just can't seem to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi.
First, congrats on being an awesome mom and spending time playing video games with your son.
But to answer your question, if you're playing any of the recent versions of Minecraft (1.6 - current) then you don't need mcpatcher or optifine to use any resource packs. I still recommend using one or the other because a lot of the features of the pack won't be available in-game without using one of them, so your experience will be somewhat diminished. They'll still function, though, and will still look better than the default.
I'm can't help you with the problem of it not recognizing it either installer, but I recommend that you make a post on the respective mod's thread about it. Remember that since you're on a Mac you'll want the .jar version of MCPatcher, not the .exe version. Beyond that, please post as much relevant information as you can provide on the thread of each mod and hopefully someone will be able to offer a solution. Screenshots, crash reports, error logs, etc will all help someone to help you.
I hope that helps you.
