It's nice how Mojang added the randomization option for blocks, and also that you can do things like the different texture for worn/placed pumpkins.
Maybe you should add some subtle references to Microsoft in the pack, now that Mojang is a subsidiary of theirs...or something. Jeez I hope there's still a chance for Minecraft Wii U/3DS

The pumpkin thing is a little weird. You can still see the face while it's being held in your hand too... I just turned it so that you can only see it from behind the player. I can't get rid of it completely, unfortunately.
Maybe you should add some subtle references to Microsoft in the pack, now that Mojang is a subsidiary of theirs...or something. Jeez I hope there's still a chance for Minecraft Wii U/3DS
I'd prefer not to think about that, much less make references to it.
And no, I don't think that the WiiU or 3DS versions of Minecraft will ever see the light of day. Not because of Mojang, or even Microsoft, but because of Nintendo themselves. While I've long been a Nintendo fan, they've made nothing but bad decisions recently. I'm guessing they either already turned it down based on the fact that Minecraft is still all but unheard of in Japan, or wanted to impose too many restrictions on 4J Studios for the project to be worth while and got snubbed as a result.
Right now I have a lot that's going on in my life. This isn't the place to discuss it, but sufficed to say I'm once again turning into a stressed out little artist.
More to the point... I'm getting tired of working on this pack. About two weeks ago now I was working on re-making the birch planks for the third time since this pack started... and I just completely couldn't do it. Nothing I tried looked good, and the more I struggled with it the more I started to really question what I was doing with this pack. Why was I re-doing these things when nobody really seems to care?
This brought me to another conclusion about my relationship to this pack: I'm not getting the feedback that I need to keep going. While this pack can easily get 500 downloads a day on days when I update it it's becoming increasingly rare that anyone even bothers to say "thank you" much less actually tell me what they think of the pack. I'm not saying that I expect everyone who downloads it to drop me a line, but having people provide feedback on this pack is what keeps me working on it. That feedback has dwindled to being almost non-existent.
Feedback is appreciated... and if you care about this pack continuing to be updated it might just be required.
~Alvoria
I just wanna say here, that a lot of what you've said here is how I've been feeling with my pack for a long time. The main difference here is that I was not actually tired of making my pack (although I do not play Minecraft anymore, so tired in that aspect), but I have things that I would rather be doing. I also don't provide mod support besides MCpatcher, largely because I don't use mods, so if something is broken due to a change, I would never know. The other biggest difference here is I don't get 500 downloads a day (or even in a month!), instead I get about 0-5 downloads a day (2 from PMC, 3 from Curse), and that is decreasing as I haven't updated recently.
So, I guess that your situation makes me realize I'm in a bigger hole than I thought, and makes me feel a bit better with my responses. I get very little feedback as well, and when I do get feedback, it's from people that don't use my pack, or in some cases might not even like it. I feel like if I got 500 downloads a day, I would feel much better about it, because it would mean people are still using it.... my last feelings on the pack were that I was making the pack only for myself because it wasn't getting many downloads. And then it comes back at me: If I'm doing this mainly for myself, and I don't play the game anymore, what's the point?
As for feedback: I've never really liked the pack due to how rough/grainy things are, particularly the plant stuff, but I actually really like the wood stuff you posted above. I especially like the wood grain you did (on the slabs), it looks actually natural, which is something I would've done had I thought it was do-able in 16x, but then again I also think that 2 random textures isn't enough. It's really awesome on oak and birch, just 2 seems a bit too repetitive. Maybe with random rotation?
Also, maybe you should put the wood grain from slabs onto the top of planks as well? I've never been a fan of directional block tops. Porting the CTM tops I had done for all of the bricks is the first thing I did when custom textures was added to the model format. I thought about it for planks, but never got around to it.....

I hear you. In your case, I'd say that there's no shame in quitting. If your interest isn't here, it isn't. No need to justify it. People fall in and out of love with games all the time. Minecraft is no different in that regard.
As for feedback: I've never really liked the pack due to how rough/grainy things are, particularly the plant stuff, but I actually really like the wood stuff you posted above. It's really awesome on oak and birch, just 2 seems a bit too repetitive. Maybe with random rotation?
The problem with random rotation is that it I'd have to do something special to make the borders work right since I have that beveled edge I love so much. This either means making four variations of each one... at which point I might just as well make six more unique textures and be done with it. I might consider adding one more birch slab variant if I can find it in the 'budget' for the wood project.
More to the point, Minecraft's randomness gets repetitive anyway. Even in my birch planks which have six variants I still see rows of seven or more of the same texture in a row. It's random, but not well distributed.
Also, maybe you should put the wood grain from slabs onto the top of planks as well? I've never been a fan of directional block tops. Porting the CTM tops I had done for all of the bricks is the first thing I did when custom textures was added to the model format. I thought about it for planks, but never got around to it.....
I actually like them the way that they are. I'm a fan of hard-wood flooring in real life, so I like having that option in Minecraft as well. Yea, there are places where it looks a bit wonky. Nothing to be done about that since the same goes for every block no matter what texture you use. Just the nature of the game, really. (At least until we get neighbor-dependent CTM then all bets are off) If I get really stuck for an idea for the plank tops I'll consider it. Until then, I think I'm going to pass on that idea.
I'd prefer not to think about that, much less make references to it.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from there, but hopefully Mojang's just going to be supported by Microsoft and not changed much otherwise. That'd sure help with the plugin API...
With Nintendo, I have to disagree with the "bad decisions" thing, but opinions are just that. Miyamoto has actually stated interest in Minecraft for the Wii U, as he thought it would benefit both companies due to Minecraft not being popular over there, but that's a tough market balance decision, which is likely why there's no rumor or further information.
I'm looking for a couple of people to test the new models I've done for the pack. While everything appears to be working for me, I'd really love a second (and third) pairs of eyes to check everything out and make sure there's no weirdness.
Requirements:
● You must be able to play Minecraft 1.8 on your computer (duh)
● You must be willing to give detailed information about anything you find that looks wrong. This includes providing screenshots, debug info, session logs, etc.
● You must actually like this pack. I don't want anyone being a jerk about this.
If you're interested, post in this thread. I'll send you the add-on pack via PM.

I could go on about why I think Nintendo has made bad decisions recently (*cough* Youtube *cough*), but I'll spare you. I did some reading after I posted that, and it seems like the simple answer is that Nintendo was just last in line. Minecraft is already on every other device so there's just no reason for 4J Studios to develop it for Nintendo's hardware as well since everyone probably already owns something that Minecraft can run on. Market saturation and all that.
XD the villagers look funny (what are they? i'm curious.)
They're not supposed to be a reference to anything in particular. They're just what came to mind as I was texturing them. Then again, I did just watch Megamind so...

Not in so much. If you want to test my pack, you can download the latest version which has all of the stuff that I wanted people to beta test in it. Pay particular attention to the oak, spruce, and birch stairs. You'll know if anything is wrong with them.
Thanks for the offer any way. I'll keep you in mind for next time.

While I'm still debating on whether or not I want to make Jungle Wood green, I know that I want to make Acacia Wood more of a reddish hue. To that end, I decided to make it rosewood. Acacia wood isn't all that attractive, and the pronounced grain is difficult to do in 16x, so it make sense to me to try making it a little bit different.
I like the "rosewood" stile. But i think green wood wouldn't be good in minecraft, moreover it should looks like bamboo then. I guess the green color would annoy me after some time.
But i can only with an example be 100% sure.
Sorry I didn't reply right away, but I wanted to give you the example you want. And by that I mean actually finishing them because why not.
Here go you:
I'm actually enjoying this quite a lot, but naturally I haven't been able to play with it in-game to be sure. For the time being, though, I'm going to keep it unless I get a TON of negative feedback about it. We'll see how I feel when I actually find a jungle in my single player world.
Feedback is appreciated. You know, if you didn't already know that.

Ooh... that's not good.
Ideally you wouldn't be looking entirely at that color of wood in a normal environment, so that shouldn't be a major factor. As I said, though, I'll wait to see what sort of feedback I get. If a lot of other people tell me something similar I'll consider changing it... possibly swapping the rosewood into Jungle and making a new orange-style wood for Acacia. We'll see.
maybe it looks not that bad if you give you room more variety. every i see is the color green. Place some more objects like chests, beds, carpets and paintings.
And yet you didn't object when everything was the color red in the previous screenshot.
Either way, everyone is coming out in force to tell me that they don't like the green wood. I'll drop it then.
Maybe I'll make the new Acacia wood look like urinewood instead. Hope you all like yellow wood more than the green!
Hey I just downloaded the pack and read through the last few pages. So I have two opinions;
Firstly, the textures themselves. I adore how they fit together, when they do. Like you said, default's maddening style changes (what were they thinking with the chicken item?) are frustrating to no end. I very much like how you decided to combat those Of course nothing's perfect and to me I don't really appreciate the grainy look on many textures (grass, logs, villagers etc) especially against the gorgeous smoothness of the wood blocks. The GUI's are probably my favourite thing, I adore the smooth item background. Anyway I can't give too much texture critique because this isn't the sort of texturepack I use very often.
My more important point is about your plea for attention a few pages back. I completely understand the sentiment and don't really hold anything against you (I have the utmost respect for your work on critiquing other people's packs and participating in discussion in the discussion forums and union), but it seems poor form to me to be begging for people to like your work. Like lemon said, you have to have a reason to keep doing this, and if that reason is because you want other people to like your work then you have to pander to their needs, not expect them to pander to yours. Creating something that you believe is beautiful and then demanding that everyone else appreciate it is nonsense, and conversely if you create something that the crowd is asking for, it's quite likely that you as an artist will feel the work is hollow.
I've started and stopped many texturepacks and the one thing that has always remained constant is that I do them for myself. I create textures that I want to see in game, and although I put them up for others to use I don't expect others to use them.
Sorry for the rant, but I was surprised to such a respected texture-r pleading for replies. Stay strong, and search for your reason to texture
