I was wondering if anyone would think that this is something that should be added to Sanity:
I made planks different on the sides than on the top, and there's a randomness to the top texture to make it less homogenous so that the individual planks feel like they begin and end, but are longer than a block long. Slabs likewise have random textures on the top and sides that are unique. Stacked oak slabs are also different from oak planks. Fences and fence gates also have more well-defined textures. The textures on stairs are dependent on their orientation, and the corner stairs display the wood texture logically.
I'm very happy with how it all looks, but of course I'd like some feedback.
Woah. This is what the textures should be like in every texture pack. The faces and stuff, of course, not your art style; that would be out of place in a lot of packs, plus without permission and stuff or whatever...you know, I'll just stop with that now. Seriously, though. Why so few people here anymore?

Actually people have permission to use this style, or even to expand this pack. I have a fairly permissive license.
I'm still revising a lot of that stuff, so expect that it's going to be significantly different from what you see in that screenshot. Even so, it's good to know that you like what I've done so far.
I'm not too much in block models but you've done some pretty nice stuff these days, congrats!
Keep up the good work mate!
Thanks! I'm glad you care. Just knowing a few people do makes the task of working on this pack significantly less laborious.
About 90% of what I'm doing with the block models is just making it so that I can texture blocks individually that used to share textures. The buttons and levers are about the most extreme I'm going to go for the time being, although I do intend to make some things a little more unique. In particular I'm working on making each type of fence and fence gate a little different. Hopefully it will work out and look good.
So I've been working with and tweaking the Oak wood quite a bit. Here's what I've got going on now:
I'd really appreciate feedback on how you all think that this project is going. It's particularly important to me that I get the oak wood right, since it's the most prevalent type of wood, being the 'default' for all wooden things that aren't type-specific yet. You can see this in the oak trapdoor, pressure plate, and sign. All are oak wood, so it's important that I get them right.
Let me know what you think. I REALLY want opinions on this, good or bad. Thank you!
Ok. I like the oak textures a lot. How you have a stripe of them on the wall really shows what can be done. The fence gates in the other pic i kind of liked more because they weren't darker but now they blended in a lot too. I like the red indicator of a pushed pressure plate, and the doors and trapdoors have a nice slat design. hard to see the top of the stairs but i think it would look weird if they were that circular grain, idk.

Here's a better shot of the stairs. Let me know what you think of them:
Also, some feedback on the Birch Fence would be greatly appreciated.
I think it's going to be a few weeks before I actually release any of these textures. Right now the planks for the various wood types are being very difficult, largely due to how vanilla Minecraft handles random textures. As such, expect a couple weeks of updates to things like the tools and other miscellaneous stuff.
. "Sanity" v.4.00 is now available for Minecraft 1.8!

As always, feedback is greatly appreciated.
OK... let's talk.
Right now I have a lot that's going on in my life. This isn't the place to discuss it, but sufficed to say I'm once again turning into a stressed out little artist.
More to the point... I'm getting tired of working on this pack. About two weeks ago now I was working on re-making the birch planks for the third time since this pack started... and I just completely couldn't do it. Nothing I tried looked good, and the more I struggled with it the more I started to really question what I was doing with this pack. Why was I re-doing these things when nobody really seems to care?
This brought me to another conclusion about my relationship to this pack: I'm not getting the feedback that I need to keep going. While this pack can easily get 500 downloads a day on days when I update it it's becoming increasingly rare that anyone even bothers to say "thank you" much less actually tell me what they think of the pack. I'm not saying that I expect everyone who downloads it to drop me a line, but having people provide feedback on this pack is what keeps me working on it. That feedback has dwindled to being almost non-existent.
For about a month I've been working on a fairly expansive add-on pack for Sanity. It's a collection of ores for a lot of big-name mods. Not full support... just the ores. The idea is to make it so that Sanity could be used with things like FTB and ATLauncher packs without the obvious breaks in the aesthetic. I've worked for a month on this project... and I honestly don't care if I ever release it. I've gotten ten mods finished, and I just don't give a crap. This is a bad place for me to be as a creative person.
Another add-on pack that I've been working on is the mod support add-on. Starting with the 1.8 version of the pack I intended to have the mod support be a separate pack. I separated out the mod stuff... but I haven't made it a separate pack yet. To put it bluntly, I'm not sure that anyone cares if this pack has mod support. Up until now I've been doing it primarily for myself, retexturing mods that I'd enjoy using... but the problem has been that I haven't had the time to actually play modded Minecraft or any Minecraft at all. Since the mod support isn't for me, and nobody else has ever told me that they use it, I'm running into the question of whether or not it's worth my time to bother to publish or maintain it.
I know that it's not anyone's fault, and if my real life were less stressful and worrying I probably wouldn't feel this way. I do feel this way, though. I do. I'm not sure what to do about it. In a time when I most need sanity to be an uplifting thing in my life it's quickly becoming a burden. I certainly can't make people comment, or give me feedback, or provide critiques of my work... but that's really what I need at the moment to keep me going on this pack.
Feedback is appreciated... and if you care about this pack continuing to be updated it might just be required.
The Netherrack and the Grass look Really good with the random rotation.
You know... I actually really don't like my grass texture. On the other hand, you're the second person to tell me how good it looks. Maybe I should reconsider my position.
The custom models that you've implemented are absolutely gorgeous. (I just want to press the Button forever!)
The activated Redstone Ore is AMAZING! (I really freaked out when I first saw it.)
The Obsidian is really pretty.
Thank you!
I've been wanting to do the buttons differently for a long time. The redstone ore was an MCPatcher feature for a long time, but with the new stone texture I took the opportunity to make most of the ores better. I'm particularly happy with how the redstone ore turned out in the latest revision.
I was in the process of re-doing all of the wooden objects in the pack when I started with this breakdown. See some of the screenshots above for what I've done so far.
Re-doing all of the logs is on the to-do list. Honestly I'm very weak when it comes to natural looking textures at this resolution, so it may take a while before I make better ones. Honestly, the ones you're seeing are already one major revision and several tweaks in.
Thank you. I appreciate that you took the time to write all of that. I'm definitely going to be taking a break from this pack for at least another week. I think I'm having a "creator breakdown", which will probably pass.
As for thinking of feedback as a plus... I have a hard time doing that. I'm the type of person that lives for feedback both good and bad. I'm happiest when people tell me what they think of my work, even if it's just that they don't like it and that I should try harder. That's the type of person I am when it comes to art. I know this is a flaw in my character, but for now it's one that I have to live with.
Thank you again for writing all of that. I appreciate it.
That might work. I've been playing with the pack more, and dirt does look better in larger amounts.
So... you're OK with it then? In all fairness, it's supposed to look a bit uneven.
I've tweaked the random rotations a bit so that it will be random on all sides. Hopefully that'll make it a bit more interesting. Let me know what you think.
A significant portion of me doubts you know the reasoning behind the textures.
With that said... Thank you for your support.
This is the reasoning, as I understood it:
"I created this pack, as I'd assume many texture pack authors do, because I grew tired of the default textures. Particularly, I don't like how inconsistent they are from one texture to the next. This is particularly evident in the items. Some, like the food, are very detailed while others are very flat and have a restricted pallet.
To put it mildly, it was driving me crazy so I thought I'd make this pack to return to Sanity."
Same thing with my texture pack, and I suspect, other authors as well. We did not like how things looked, and learned we could change them.
This is the reasoning, as I understood it:
Same thing with my texture pack, and I suspect, other authors as well. We did not like how things looked, and learned we could change them.
Ah... you meant my reason for the pack not the individual textures. Sorry, I totally misinterpreted that.
So... I'm semi-back from my mental breakdown. Thanks for everyone who left feedback and words of encouragement. I could use a lot more of that if you all don't mind.
I worked on the birch wood again. Here's what I've done so far:
A lot of it is very much in keeping with the oak wood while a few things are completely unique to the birch like the fences and the flooring. I'd really love to know what you all think of the flooring. It can be a little wonky in places due to how vanilla Minecraft handles random textures, but for the most part I like it. I really wish that there was a way to prevent the same tile from appearing right beside itself, but that's neither here nor there at the moment.
I plan to get an update out on Monday. It probably won't contain any of the wood stuff just yet. It'll mostly be more CTM features ported to vanilla 1.8. Things like removing the faces from pumpkins while still having it when worn on the head. A bunch of little nothing stuff like that. Hopefully it'll tide everyone over until I can be creative again.
Feedback is greatly appreciated... and still needed a little bit.
Edit: By the way, do you think it would really upset anyone if I moved the red-colored wood to the acacia wood and made the jungle wood green?
Quote from Alvoria:Feedback is greatly appreciated... and still needed a little bit. Edit: By the way, do you think it would really upset anyone if I moved the red-colored wood to the acacia wood and made the jungle wood green?
I think you should make the jungle wood green, and acacia reddish, also i really love that random pattern for the wood flooring, its refreshing and interesting uguu ^^ Please keep up the great work I love this resource pack and your other work <3 I hope you feel better very soon too <:

I'm still debating on the wood thing. On one side I want to keep it kind of consistent with the default in the broadest terms... but on the other hand I really want a green wood type. Since I doubt that Mojang is going to provide one for me any time soon this seems like a good option. Besides, if they do I can always shift things back... much to the annoyance of everyone who's made builds with this pack so far. Another reason in the "no" category.
I'm glad you're enjoying the pack, and I am feeling a bit better. The more people that leave feedback for me the better I feel about continuing this pack and being creative in general.

I've actually been meaning to to leave some feedback for a while, but I keep remembering while i'm away from the computer. :/
Stuff I like:
- I really like all the Diamond and Emerald stuff,
- The Netherrack and the Grass look Really good with the random rotation.

- The activated Redstone Ore is AMAZING! (I really freaked out when I first saw it.)
- The Obsidian is really pretty.
Criticism:- The planks seem kind of noisy and gradient-y.
- The Oak and Dark Oak logs seem rather busy .
- The Dirt just looks kind of blurry and smudgy.
That's about it for now.-
