Yeah! Sheep, I kinda get the same effects...what you putting in this doctor!
Doctor sheep here, I can confirm that the pack is made from 100% pure love and glory, perfectly safe for human consumption!
Decision time guys! Making new stone is super duper hard if you aren't going for something rough with huge cracks like it used to be. So there are two choices, one: I release the update with the old stone in it and I keep working on a new one for the next update.
Or two: I release the update with this stone I just made and depending on the reaction to it, I either keep it and refine the tiling, add some neat random CTM to it (I promise the CTM will be really good and varied!) or just replace it after the update with another stone I make (If I can - stone is tricky!).
Here's the stone, post back with either feedback, your choice or both!
That new stone looks excellent to me and I love the kind of layering effect it has.
I agree with MasterfulGamer, it's more than good enough to release now and then play around with it at your leisure for the next update, as ideas present themselves.
I also agree, stone is such a make or break texture and I know we have stone bricks now, and in 1.8 will have the new stone variety, but I wish we had two versions of basic stone. One that you get in nature, and the refined one you get back from cobble. With a second one we could decide to have it as all sorts of useful materials from concrete to a smoother kind of natural stone that would also help naturalise the landscape. I guess it's asking too much, now we have 3 new stone types. However, there's no getting away from normal stone...it's absolutely everywhere, like sand and dirt...now why haven't we got 3 varieties of sand and dirt? Haha, it's a vicious circle lol!

But we do, sand/red sand and technically dirt/podzol/mycellium, though they are biome specific.
No offense, Sheep, but I dislike the new stone. To me it seems like a significant downgrade from the previous stone and doesn't match the quality of the dirt at all. The shape seems severely lacking and the texture itself looks to be mostly noisy and undefined, especially in the first screenshot.
Actually, now that I'm looking at it a bit longer, it's looking better and I can see what you were going for and I think that it pretty much worked, but the problem is that I have to look to see it. If I don't look at it just the right way, then it looks a bit amateurish and scribbly. Objectively, it's that a bad texture, but it just seems low-quality compared to all of your other textures. I'm going to have to say "nay" here.

Well I can't deal with having a stone two people think is bad so its back to the drawing board... Only problem with this is that I don't know how to improve that specific texture/ style anymore. To me its reached the end of the road for that texture so the next stone is probably going to look quite different as it will be made from scratch. Oh well, just had a good nights sleep so we'll see how I fare!
Stone really is the hardest texture to get right IMO. At least if you aren't just going for something clumpy... I've spent two days on stone so far (albeit not working on it THAT often) and its still so so.
Yea, the whole cobble thing is a large reason as to why I'm changing the stone. I also want it to be more useable in building because currently although a good texture, it just doesn't work in buildings at all.
I've already adjusted the colours of the other 1.8 stone textures slightly so they match this one very well since it's a little darker than my old stone. Here's a couple of examples:

I like the latest edit over the first version...the shadows underneath each layer overhang look a little more subtle and there's a little more shape variety.
I think being less lumpy and similar to dirt is an advantage for building and possibly a slight disadvantage for sitting alongside dirt, but your original stone did look a little 'cobbly' and a little too similar to your dirt texture. This new stone has a gray 'slate' feel to it and I think it gives a whole new type of texture material to play around with when building.
Stone was bad enough before on it's own, now there are three more natural versions to juggle it with, it's even more of a job to get it right and with so few pixels to work with you've really got a heck of a task. Until folk get to play around with the new types of stone, it might not be apparent just why texture pack artists are having to rethink their old stone textures.
The only negative thing I would say about this version though, Sheep, is that I can see a vertical line of highlights right on the seam, which was immediately apparent when I first looked at it. As is always the case I can't stop seeing 'em now!
Well there are vertical lines in it that help break up the otherwise obvious horizontal stripes there would be without them. I can actually fix the tiling errors pretty easily with this texture though since all I really need to do is move the vertical lines around.
Good thing is that this version does seem to be liked better than the old one minus the tiling (which I will fix) so I WILL be uploading the update with the fixed version of this stone. Hopefully with a couple variants for random CTM too. I also need to move over all the ores and ore CTM from the old stone though.
And yea Glim, I also think that this texture should be a nice texture to use in buildings and stuff as it is quite different to most of my other textures. (especially the stone ones)
Yea, I'm still happy with my old texture, just not seeing it tiled over huge mountainsides where the new texture, IMO, does a faaaaaar better job.
I am going to be updating the pack with this new stone+CTM though, I will 100% not be using the old stone anymore. I think this is one of those textures you have to try in game and get a feel for before you can really enjoy it so hopefully most of the naysayers will still give it a chance!
Any who, I'm fixing the tiling and working on some cool CTM variants now. The CTM is MUCH more interesting than my old one so it should make cliff faces and the like look pretty cool. Will post pics when its done!
EDIT: yea okay, don't know why I forgot this, but I'll add a 'chunky stone' add on pack that has the old stone in it and all the respective ores and their CTM too. I might even do some more CTM for the stone that's actually varied and interesting unlike my first attempt at stone CTM!
Well I wouldn't use the old texture but I can make something a little more rounded and lumpy for floors and ceilings, I think that would actually be pretty neat. Just need to figure out the ctm I would need to use for that in conjunction with all the ores and everything too.
I also love the green on black, looks really cool. Gotta say too, I think you're the first person to EVER mention the command blocks. Nice to know people have actually used them!
Also people, I think the tiling is all good now:
Working on doing the ores in the new stone and then the separate top/bottom and side random CTM's. Hopefully not too difficult to work out!
Herpy derp, here's some random CTM. Think I'll try and add in a couple more with a bit more of a round look to help the variation. Might also smooth the vertical looking one a little as it's a bit too obvious at the moment.

Curse PremiumIf someone doesn't like it or want it, it's relatively easy for them to get the previous texture back.
If you're really anxious about reactions, perhaps release some "beta" pack?

Curse PremiumOpinions on this one? Is it heading in the right direction or should I just try a different style entirely?
