Under construction since Minecraft Beta 1.7, Ryan's Epic Pack is a great texture pack that still keeps the great look and feel of Minecraft, while adding awesome new stuff! Many of the blocks are shiny and clean-looking, and many are simpified textures.

It even has cool HD explosions! Still, no mods required
A crude, badly tiling gradient goes throughout this entire pack. Things seem either hastily done or filtered. The images provided simply show the flat, depthless gradients. Color choice is poor and appears as too light and flat.
I give it 0.15/5 stars.

It's ironical when people name their packs 'Epic', but the actual pack is really misleading.
Try to put more attention to your textures - add more details, more shading, more originality. Even if you wanna keep a clean and solid feel of the textures, using only a 'bucket' or 'gradient' tool is always a bad decision. I do believe this could be a great pack, but as for now, you really need to ask for criticism and suggestions from other people. And a lot.
I completely agree with you, and I've noticed that often.
I can see what you're trying to do, but you should only use this kind of style on certain blocks. It quite honestly is an eyesore when you see a stone wall or field of dirt and nothing tiles. But with a bit of work, I have a feeling it could greatly improve!

I did more than that. It took a lot more than just gradient. I've been working on it since Beta 1.7
I put quite a bit of work into it.
Well work more, make the colors less default, and fix all your tiling.
It's a 16x16 texture pack supposed to match the blocky feel of Minecraft, with a cool shiny feel to it.
I give it 0.15/5 stars.
