So I was playing minecraft the other day, and my wife* (not a minecraft player) looks over and says, "why doesn't it look good"?
"What do you mean?" I asked, already getting a little defensive.
"I mean, it's not smooth, it looks old."
"It's supposed to be that way, it's part of the charm. But it's possible to make it look better." I clicked a couple of times and spooled up LBPhotorealism.
She squinted, "I guess. I don't really like it."
"Me neither."
And that's when it hit me. Why do photorealism packs fail? There is no denying they look pretty, but they're just not fun to play with. After chewing on it a bit, I've come up with some theories.
*This personage may have been a compilation of my wife, friends, and sister.
1. With no anti aliasing, they have a ton of artifacts. This is hideous
2. The higher definition lends itself to more noticable repeating pattern sections This also is not attractive, and draws attention to how unreal the packs are
3. The overall effect reeks of the uncanny valley. The horror!
Meanwhile, the default pixel pack works so well pecisely because it has none of these drawbacks-- there are few to no artifacts, the repeating sections are not particularly noticable, and the overall effect works perfectly with the game as a whole. It does not, however, impress my wife.
Then it hit me. Why not combine the two elements? Keep the crispness of the realism packs with the warm familiarity of the standard pixel pack?
The result is my 'Pixelistic' texture pack.

Here's what I don't need:
-Complaints about the 'grid' effect of the grass, stone, and other blocks. This is done on purpose, and I am aware it's not everyone's cup of tea. I will likely release a 'seamless' version once the pack is completed.
-Complaints about how this is a simple 'bumpmapping' texture pack. A deceptively large amount of work has gone into this.
-Complaints about missing textures. This pack is in alpha, and textures will be completed over time.

*came in with low expectations of another simplecraft
*was impressed
Kudos, sir. kudos.
EDIT: Although, it might be worth it to note, that most of these really don't tile well (the snow really stuck out as far as that goes) and it kinda looks like you supersized default and ran it through a filter...a good filter, mind you.
This is very nice!
I am very impressed. Out of curiosity, what filters/techniques did you use to make this?
I used a variety of photographs (I am married to a photographer) and used some photoshop magic to massage them into the default textures, though in several cases I went off script (see lava, iron blocks, and glowstone). Special attention was paid to texture and color.
Huh, I fixed it, but I'm still not sure why they weren't displaying correctly. Thanks for the heads up!

You say that you don't like most photorealism packs, but have you tries Misa's? I don't like realistic looks to Minecraft, but when I see Misa's pack, I think, "Oh my, this is AWESOME!" Plus, with the CTM, she made it so there are almost no noticeable patterns.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
The official Bluebird continuation is underway! Please come and help keep the pack alive!
Maybe I'm just a silly nub, but a few things that have bothered me with the HD textures are Glowstones (i dont like the original design either tbh), Glass, Wheat and animals.
Your glowstone (along with your other textures) are very nice, this will not be a problem.
My beef with glass is the inventory icon. HD glass is realistic - see through - so trying to find it can be hard (especially if you only have one).
In some texture packs, its hard to tell when wheat is finished. Vanilla minecraft keeps it obvious. Keep it obvious.
Personally I think the chunky animals are cute. A pig with a realistic face isn't so cute. If you decide to change animal textures (which frankly I dont think you have to), just keep in mind that the originals were pretty awesome.
These are just my opinions, maybe more people like the realistic piggies, idk.
Ohh and back to the noob thing, this pack is really nice because the textures/images are similar enough to vanilla that I don't have to confuse myself when reading the wiki.
Wow...

EDIT: I played some Minecraft with it and instantly saw that the textures have serious tilling issues. I that was intentional, I understand. But the dirt and the stone look kinda weird when it's not tilled.
Can't wait to try out a seamless version that manages to keep the look. I really like this as far as 'default-like' packs go. I'd recommend the 64 or 128 version. The 32 version is barely enough to get the effect across. Looking forward to updates!

I feel the same way you do in almost every respect, you'll be happy to know I have fixed the glass block!
Hey what mods do you recommend using to get the full potential out of this texture pack. Don't worry about lag n such my comp can handle anything.
I use optifine with a DoF (depth of field) effect and wavy grass. Look into something called GLSL Shaders for a truly stunning visual minecraft experience.
