make a new image that is 16x whatever your resolution is
also if you do this i recomend that you keep a copy of the default so you know where things go

Actually - No. And no one is making you post your first attempts. If you really want to make a tolerable texture pack, you need to learn how to make your own textures first.

Granted, some of these are for characters, but the fundamentals of what's being described ring true for either blocks in Minecraft or pixel art for characters.

No one told you to post your first attempts, nor did they tell you not to be creative and to just take the default and make it look even crappier than it already is. And no, I refined mine and made it look good before I even looked at the final product.

There are red borders around the weapons and the armor is one color and not a blend. The ores now have the first letter of their name on the block.
(Next time add some shading and don't modify the defualt, start from scratch.)

But yes, what is here is crap.
