With the 256x pack I run at 160 to 200 FPS but when I activate shaders .... holy cow, I plunge to the 20s and 30s. Have tried several of the popular shader packs, with and without the R3D assist but it makes no difference. Can this possibly be normal? (Also, with shaders it's ridiculously dark at night and underground ... not much suitable for my adventuring.)

Lots of missing factors to consider (your rig, other mods in use, etc.) but the short answer is ... YES. Shaders are framerate killers.

Hey glad to hear back from you. While I play MC every now and then, I've always used your Smooth Realistic pack, even if its outdated. I don't know how to say it other than it just looks really damn good. It keeps to the default texture roughly, it looks very sharp without being too harsh on the computer, and I just flatout like it a lot. Wish I could help with KS, but money short. I hope things work out though
May I point out that... You'll never be finished with a texture pack - sorry to squash your dreams.. But MineCraft will most likely always be updated (at least for a fair few years).. Meaning any texture pack will need to be continuously updated..
Could it maybe, be an idea, to bring on board more people to help you, because.. It seems to me that you're biting off more than you can chew..
But I'm just being selfish here, 'cos I'd like to be able to use Red Craft again - I am terribly sorry but the very red background and huge letters saying NOT COMPATIBLE sorta.. kinda... very much keeps me from using it, even though several websites claim it's 1.11.2 enabled....
I understand your thinking, and you are not the first one to propose this idea. The main reason for why this isn't a community project is because I'm in a way selfish and want this to be my work. If I ever come to a point where I conclude that this is too much for me, I will make it open for anyone to do what they please with.
I can do this on my own. All I need is enough time to get to that 100% mark. Then keeping it updated won't be a problem.
The red (not incompatible) is caused by one line of code that should be changed from "2" to "3". That will be fixed in the next update.

the 512 pack wont run also adfly is dangerous and should be shutdown

His add-on continue R3D Default Realism which is discontinued by the creator of R3D (only R3D Smooth Realism is now updated).
why it's discontinued? i would like the biomes o'plenty r3d craft support
