Use the pack file is recommended because it represents the pack the best and it's always in the correct resolutions (eg 16x, 32x, 256x etc). You can use other files too but make sure its the right resolution.

I would love to see the default realism updated to 1.8
I'm going to ask a very silly question.
What is the difference between the 'default realism' pack and the 'smooth realism' pack? It doesn't seem to be clearly answered in the post... Thanks.

Default realism looks like default but the pixels are textured to what they are.
Smooth realism is like most other realistic Packs
I've recently got back into Minecraft and I've installed this Texture Pack.
I love it, but I've noticed that a few items haven't been retextured. Such as the birch logs and Dark Oak Doors.
Is this just on my end or does anyone else get this?
Why doesn't the birch log have a texture in Smooth Reaism?
It says it is for 1.8, but all the download links bring me to the 1.7 version (default realism)

I love this texture pack! It just makes minecraft look so much more detailed.
R3dCraft Smooth Realism is probably my favorite resource pack because of the realism and the fact that it's very lightweight. Thank You!

If you mean mods: They can be used in 1.8 but ONLY With Intel 3000, AMD or NVIDIA, with certain versions of forge and optifine.
If you mean vanilla: Shaders still work in 1.8 via Super Secret Settings.
