How about some metal plates screwed directly onto the horse? perhaps with a tiny bit of blood dripping down...
Horseshoes are nailed on, so why not horse armor as well?
Because when you nail a horseshoe to a horse, you're nailing it to their hoof, not their stomach.
A hoof is basically a giant toenail, I don't think they have much feeling in it. It'd be kinda like getting a haircut, then trying to get a fingercut.

I like the idea of the porphine, but wouldn't it be kinda hard to make it obvious that it's nailed on when you only have 64x to work with? The nails would have to be really big and/or a significantly different color than the rest of the armor.

The little drips of dry blood coming down from each 2x2px nail head should indicate it.

I'm keeping it tame. I have plenty of ideas better suited for a horror pack that im saving in the event that i finish this and start another.
maybe we are thinking of different things... I was thinking that he wanted to put a SAW-type rig on the horse, and yes, that would be disturbing.

Nope, not a saw trap, no blades at all, really. It's not for cutting the horse, it's for holding the armor onto the horse... to protect it.
I'm not sure how yet, but i want to incorporate the creepy wheat critters into the hay bale somehow.
The first thing that comes to mind is a sort of "cow bug". Maybe it could be like a grasshopper or something, but with the head of a cow.
(I know there are actually a crapton of bugs that eat hay, but I don't know any of them. >.<)
Oh, and maybe you can make it animated to where every few seconds the bug comes out of the hay, hops around for a bit, then goes back in.

I think all horses keep their colors when tamed, but the saddle and armors have different textures that he'll have to do.
