when you make a basic texture (like stone) do you start with a colour and then use the burn/dodge tool? or do you find new colours?
stone was hard for me XD
though ive learned a lot since then just by experimenting and could probably do better now. i think my mistake was going for an extremely smooth stone texture, going for a rougher stone looking like a rougher, more natural cobblestone is probably better, and is what many people do.
ill tell ya what though, GIMP is probably the best free program to use for texturing, due to the offset feature. never use the make seamless tool in gimp, it will ruin your texture, although it will ruin it seamlessly...
start by drawing the middle of your texture, leaving a nice big space around the edges. your texture should absolutely not touch the sides at first, but it should be irregular in shape, and can come close in some areas. then you go to layer > offset and do x2/y2. this will turn the image inside out. continue drawing your texture until it is filled in. what you have now will be seamless.
make some grit, or whatever texture you want within the texture, put the outline on top, perhaps add some tilable blur for things like cobblestone cracks, and setting it to overlay is always good as it gives it a more shadowed effect... then choose a light direction, and add some shading. depending on the feel of your pack, the colors you shade with vary. i mostly use black and white for shading, since it creates a more dramatic feel if done right, although i sometimes add just a bit of color to the shadows.

Thanks! You have no idea of how helpfull that is! And for some constructive critisism to your pack: The nether got way to many squares, try to take a different approach to netherstone other than having them framed inn. As to what they could look like, i have no idea x)

you complain about a MINECRAFT texture pack having too many squares? MINECRAFT? XD
here's the melon texture! i meant to upload this a few days ago, actually... i just kind of... forgot.
anyway, bad news. i may have to put this texture pack on hold sooner than i thought. i figured id be able to finish the plants before i become homeless, but... my mouse is having some serious issues, and i dont have any money to buy a new one.
anyway, if anyone can give me advice on how to fix this, id greatly appreciate it. i cant continue this pack until its working again. details in the spoiler below...
i have a wireless logitech mouse.
today it started having a problem with the left click. sometimes when i left click it works fine, but more often than not, it will either click multiple times with a single click, or not click at all.
holding and dragging is impossible, which is absolutely vital for texturing.
ive tried the following:
changing the battery.
deleting and reinstalling the driver.
putting the reciever in a different usb slot
restarting the computer
nothing helped. any advice on this would be greatly appreciated, as i would like to get back to making this texture pack, and am currently unable to.
That mouse issue sounds like the microswitch is going bad... they do wear out after a while. Unless you're good with a soldering iron and have a spare, replacement is the best bet.
Strangely, I've been cleaning up the house and just hit the "dispose of redundant electronics" stage. I have a corded Microsoft optical mouse that is surplus. If you can PM me an address I can use, I'll send it down. It would probably be a good idea to include a name, too... the postal employees might look at "13thMurder" a little oddly.
If you're worried about payment, I'll call it even if the texture pack is finished when it's convenient for you. Real life first.
Editted addition: The melon texture screenshot is actually at the bottom of page 12 - post # 240. In answer to the question on interior color, I'm thinking a green a shade lighter than the lily pads in the background. Reddish exterior and greenish interior = reverse watermelon. Melonwater?

at this point im not sure ill still have an address by time it would get here, since ive got about a week to go.
but i fixed my mouse. i figured draining any charge it might have in it could help fix certain problems, so i left it switched on for the night (now that i think of it, i dont think that made a difference) with the battery out (that's what did it) and now its working normally again. not sure how long it will do so for, but it is indeed working.
insideout watermelon sounds good! and i guess i did forget i posted it XD i looked at the last few pages, and somehow missed it.
insideout watermelon sounds good! and i guess i did forget i posted it XD i looked at the last few pages, and somehow missed it.
How could you forget? It's not like you've had anything else on your mind.
If you're down to a week with no possibilities in sight (or even if there are), it might be a good idea to arrange a mailing address with a friend in the area.
I'm glad your mouse is working... I hope it holds up. Maybe I'll dissect the one I have for parts.
i remembered having a screenshot i was too tried to post, and i thought it was that one since it was sitting around on my desktop still and i usually delete them as soon as i upload them to keep things neat(ish)
now that i think of it, that was the mushroom one.
ah well, no harm in it i suppose, and its not like i can delete my own post.
i dont really have any friends in reality. honestly, outside of the internet i am amazingly bad at socializing.
it could possibly be partly due to the fact that i have a bit of trouble talking, and people think im far too quiet and sound british or australian or... something like that. but no... i had my jaw broken a few years back and it healed wrong making it hard to move it right, so i tend to talk through clenched teeth. people dont seem to like that much, so im more comfortable with typing anyway.
i suppose its common of us artistical types, being hermits. im really considering joining hermits united. ive heard its good fun... for a hermit.
ive had an idea though. im thinking of making the pumpkins... mechanically augmented. the pumpkin, i assure you... never asked for this >.> references to things... they're fun, yeah?
EDIT!:
I have managed to scrape together some cash and buy a new mouse. however, this $40 mouse, that i figured would be perfect for what i needed it for, was... unfortunately, false advertising. just goes to show, not only HP's computers are crap, everything they make is.
the "fully customizable" buttons can take the place of very few keys... that in itself i could have improvised. however, it also has another problem: holding down one of these "customizable" buttons does not register as holding down the key it is set to take the place of, but instead registers as having clicked the key once, even when held down. useless for artistic purposes.
not to mention, its uncomfortable as hell. i only tested it out for a few minutes, and my arm is quite sore.
had i spent just $5 more i could have gotten a logitech, which would have probably worked perfectly. my current dying mouse is a logitech, and ive had it 2 years and used the hell out of it. id say its had a good long life. tomorrow i shall see about scraping together some change and seeing about exchaning this thing for an actual working mouse. lets just hope frys doesnt mind shredded packaging. it was hard to get out of there...
you're about to become homeless and you're making a texture pack for minecraft? dude i home is way more important than this!
true. i spend a lot of time filling out applications to get a job, too. but there are only so many places i can apply to currently.
i need a license so i can get around better, as i cant afford public transportation (it costs a lot more than gas, surprisingly enough)
anyway, i was supposed to be getting my license today, but my dad went and borrowed my car and lost the key causing me to miss the appointment.
no harm in making a texture pack in my spare time, is there? if i ever get a home again, i can come back and finish it... or i might die out there. ya never know, really... its best not to give it too much thought, aside from the ways to survive i have planned out. i just like having a distraction is all...
im not really what more i could be doing anyway...
I like that looks of that... definitely unique! I haven't had a chance to check in-game - did you change the helmet cut-out in first person view to match the image?

there is no such thing as too much deus ex. unless you play invisible war... more than 10 minutes of that game is too much
anyway... ive not done the overlay yet for it. i plan to though, it shall be quite analog, yet technical. lots of gauges and things to measure... whatever it is people who stick pumpkins on their heads like to measure. perhaps ill add a sarcasm gauge, and a realtime updating radar map showing where all the idiots who have gone and put pumpkins on their heads are *note, radar is only accurate in single player*
Only single player, too bad.How are you going to find me on servers then?
Anyway you made 4 textures(pumpkin front, side, back and jack-o-lantern front) and it looks great but why is it augmented on the front?Sure theres no reason for anywhere else except creativity ofcourse.
(it just shows a dot in the middle of the radar when the pumpkin is equipped, as with radar the center dot is the current location of the radar device)
also (directed at the thread in general), dont worry, ive not given up on the texture pack, ive just been rather sick for awhile and not feeling up to doing much of anything at all.

Retired Staffmechanically augmented pumpkin/jack o lantern.
3 textures in all.
which took me most of 2 days... hopefully this was one of the textures that though it took forever, is highly successful.
thoughts?
it never asked for this!
