I made a texture pack that helps with your aim at far distances (Up to 100 blocks away) by putting guides about how high to aim.
Here's how it looks:
Basically, aim with the right bracket and it's a head shot from 20-100 blocks away.
Please note that I took time to gather accurate data, so when something fits in the 20 bracket, it really is 20 blocks away.
If you want to know how it works: http://en.wikipedia....ic_rangefinding
If you want to know how to use it:
**DON'T FORGET TO PUT A PUMPKIN ON YOUR HEAD TO GET THE SCOPE!**
It also takes into account the fact the bow shoots a little to the right of the center of the screen so you can aim the direct center of the bracket.
The advantage of changing the pumpkin graphic is that you can easily choose to have it or not. You could also make a copy of each texture pack you use and have the alternate with the cross hair graphic adjusted (assuming the size of the graphic can even scale accordingly), but in order to switch you have to save and quit, then reload the world.
Neither one is really difficult, and it's just a game, but the pumpkin option is much more convenient. I think this is pretty awesome, and may use it.
This is an amazing tool for aiming! I built a map, testing shooting distances by 10s from 10 to 100, and with a little bit of practice, I hit my target every time. Thank you so much, for the incredibly useful tool!
Good job on the HUD! I'm shooting like a pro now like never before! Although on one of my cow murdering rampages i noticed that it was difficult to shoot them while they run away. So i have a proposition. Make a stadiametric sight for the different speeds ie: flying, sprinting, walking and sneaking. It would have to be on both sides.
Good luck!
Hey, I know this thread has kinda been dead for a while now, so I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes, but I *tried* to update the texturepack for 1.5.1
I think it still works; I've tried it and it seems to still be very accurate. The reason that the old texturepack wasn't working was because Minecraft wants the pumpkin blur to be a perfect square, not a rectangle like the old stadiametric rangefinder was.
Hey Starport592, thanks for updating it.
So I actually did check and it seems it got corrupted or something, because I got it to work with the rectangle version on the latest MC version. I will update the download non the less.
It seems like the distances got screwed or something because the 20 blocks distance does not fit in the 20 blocks bracket anymore, so I will also update the distances and the guides.
Clever! You calibrated yours to two blocks! I set mine to one block, but that means I can't get my rangefinder on the left much higher than 50. Also, have you tried using GIMP? It would be very useful in this situation, as you would be able to use it to make the lines party transparent, allowing for the user to retain their visibility in all parts of their screen.

Download (Any version of minecraft): Stadia.zip
To install, put in your texturepacks folder.
Nytrose made a version which has more brackets and also calculation for single blocks.

You have to select Stadia.zip as your texture pack and then put a pumpkin on your head.
Good luck!

I also redid the calculations for the range finder and the brackets.
Note that you have to use "Normal" FoV for this to work. Quake pros don't need Stadiametric Rangefinding anyway.
Thank you. It's live at http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1782037- if you're interested.
The last time dlordazgalor was active was about a year ago so I doubt he will be updating this.
Here is a stadiametric rangefinder I made that uses an external clickthrough window to have it open without a pumpkin or anything like that. http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-tools/2481477-minecraft-stadiametric-rangefinder-archery-aiming
