My problem is I'm trying to get a 512x texture pack to run on my computer and it says," Minecraft has run out of memory ". What can I do to fix this? Will upgrading RAM, or my graphics card help more and what would the minimum that I have to upgrade to be?
I have 4gb ddr3 of RAM currently and a Nvidea Geforce 280 graphics card.
(my pc requires a low profile card).
yea you pc is going to struggle with graphics/processing at the resolution try adding more ram to your computer if u have 4gb u can probably get it up to 8gb (about $50) also A better graphics card is recommended (please have a look at this chart)
If your looking to speed up your minecraft without buying stuff, try using optifine instead of MCPatcher
Also dedicate more RAM to minecraft (default is at 512mb or 1/2gb)
You can do this but copying this code into a new text document
1GB of RAM
@ECHO "Starting with more RAM!"
javaw -Xmx1024m -jar "C:\Users\"User Name"\"Location"\minecraft.exe
2GB of RAM
@ECHO "Starting with more RAM!"
javaw -Xmx2048m -jar "C:\Users\"User Name"\"Location"\minecraft.exe
3GB of RAM
@ECHO "Starting with more RAM!"
javaw -Xmx3072m -jar "C:\Users\"User Name"\"Location"\minecraft.exe
Save the text document as "MC More RAM.bat"
(select all files to do this)
then u should be set
Yeah, well i'm definitely not getting a gtx 690 for 1,000 bucks XD but I will try doing that java thing or buying more ram/a new graphics card for under $105 (Thats all I have). Would it be dangerous to go to 3 gigabytes of RAM?

I would not go as far as 3GB try to keep it half 2GB I currently have 32GB of RAM and I dedicate 16GB
I'm with Gamex101... I have 4 dedicated.. that's half of mine. I think I have only come close to using it all once.. but that was after flying in one direction for an hour on my server...lol (my pack + shaders = memory hog)
Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to have a section in the Texture Pack Central for texture packs that have mod support (IC2, BC, RP2, etc.), or perhaps noting if a texture pack does have mod support when listing it? I have difficulty locating texture packs that have support for mods that I play with when searching the Minecraft forums because it isn't usually mentioned in the posts' titles. If there were a way to easily locate texture packs that have mod support, I'd really appreciate that, and if that's already possible I'd be really thankful if someone could inform me. Sorry if this question has been asked before.

I have been Considering this idea for quite a while now , but in order to do this i need the help from the community please list any pack that have mod support or let me know if your pack does
just a note about 1.3... I'm uploading my 1.3 update as I type this.. as for mod support, I'm reworking the glsl suport but it will be up as soon as the mod is 1.3 ready, I have one of the skyboxes in for the new mcpatcher, so I guess add that too. I'm also working on ctm support, but I'll let you know when that is ready.
and kudos on the way you are handling the update.. I read the note in the op, and think it is the best way to go about it.
and as always I have custom animations.. so I guess by default I have basic mod support...lol

you are very welcome... and thank you for taking the time to rebuild this thread. It's a lot of work for very little recognition, but a great service to the community.. I'm happy you took it over and are keeping it updated!
Another problem I've been having is that I haven't been able to get any shaders mod to work with mcpatcher. Almost all of them say that it requires optifine to run, so I tried downloading optifine through mcpatcher and turning off the mods that it said to on the forum. After I did that I tested minecraft without the shaders mod and it wouldn't run a minute without giving me a black screen, so I turned off all of the default mods in mcpatcher and it was still giving me a black screen (I wasn't running modloader). I didn't even get to the point of installing the mod =(. Please help.

Shaders is a very tricky and picky mod u have to install it just right
Make sure if you are running the installer as administrator
Be sure to install Optifine first on a blank minecraft
DO NOT INSTALL MC PATCHER IF U HAVE OPTIFINE INSTALLED

Curse Premiumsame goes for patcher...install before shaders.
and try to avoid using any mods that require installing modloader with the shader mod...they don't play well together in my experience.
Thats weird with Optifine i get between 700-850fps
