These are detailed instructions on how to make an HD texture! I figured out how to do this by trial and error. I hope this helps! the editing program i use is adobe photo shop 8. THIS IS ONLY FOR WINDOWS
1) create a folder named anything you want it to be
2) open the start menu and type %appdata% (that exactly!)
2a) if you have xp, click run and type that in the dialoge box
3) open the .minecraft folder, the open the bin folder.
4) open the minecraft.jar file with winrar, winzip, 7zip e.t.c.
5) remember that folder? copy the armor, environment, gui, item, misc, mob, and terrain FOLDERS into your folder
6) then, copy the particles.png and the terrain.png into that same folder.
6a) if you want to retexture a mod, just copy the folder containing the texture into your same folder.
7) create a .txt document and save it as pack.txt and type in the decription of your texturepack in it. this will show up in the texturepack folder.
7a) place the texture pack image (the one that will show up when you run minecraft) in your folder, and name it as pack.png
8) now, it's time to start editing! open any png image with adobe... you know what.
9) now for the tricky part. with the image you opened, go the the image tab>resize>image size
10) activate all of the check boxes at the bottom.
11) for the pixel demensions, double the height (if your doing an 32x32 texture pack, if you do a 64x64, you 4x the size and so on). if you have all of the boxes checked, it should automatically do the correct width. make sure it is set at pixels, not percent. (the document size doesn't matter) at the bottom of that window, you will see a drop-down box that most likely says something about Bicubic. open that and change it to Nearest Neighbor. IMPORTANT!!! THIS WILL MAKE THE NEW IMAGE BLURRY IF YOU DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after that, click ok. this makes the image editable for 32x32 (or whatever) texture
12) TIP: the image you opened might have a tranparent background (if your editing an image that you can see the texture perfectly, you don't have do this). create a new layer and drag it below the layer of the file you opened. THIS LAYER WILL BE DELETED LATER. IF YOU DON'T, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO READ THE FILE. use the flood fill tool (paint bucket) to flood THAT LAYER with the desired color. the best color should be a contrasting color so you can see what your doing better.
13) SELECT THE IMAGE LAYER YOU'RE GOING TO EDIT!!! IF YOU DON'T, YOU'LL JUST EDIT THE BACKGROUND!!! I DON'T WANNA HEAR CRAP FROM YOU BECAUSE YOU CANT EDIT IT!!!
13a) zoom in as much as you need to, it's easier to see it.
14) use the lasso tool (the lasso looking icon). RIGHT click the icon and change it to regular lasso tool if you haven't.
15) this part is important! use that to select ONE PIXEL by drawing a circle around the square you want to edit. when you do that, you can see the selection is a square. that's the pixel because you're zoomed up. then, go back to the flood fill tool and fill the selection with the desired color. (use your imagination!) yes, one, by one. do not go outside what is already in there, you may interfere with other textures!
16a) to make a tranparent pixel (it will be see through in minecraft) just select it, and hit the Delete key.
16) edit what you want, and remember to save it. don't forget to delete that background layer you made. but i warn you, changing all of the textures may take a while!
17) to use the texture pack you've made, save the folder you made as a zip folder, (you may want to back it up) and place it in:
C:\users\-youracountnamehere-\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\texturepacks
18) get the latest version of mcpatcher (or optifine) and install it. search them if you don't know what to do.
19) run minecraft, open the texturepacks thingy (i think it's called a tab, but idk) and select your texture pack.
20) enjoy! tell me if you have any problems!
IMPORTANT! IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WHEN YOU SAVE THE FILE, AND THEN YOU CAN'T OPEN IT AGAIN, I'M DEAPLY SORRY. I'LL TRY TO FIND OUT HOW TO PREVENT THIS!!!
