Does anyone know details about the upcoming trading and currency?
Is it possible to craft money (out of gold)? And what should our currency look like? Money will be pretty worthless, I'd vote for clean water, if this wasn't already used in the pack.
Any ideas?
As I learned in economics: Anything that is rare and sought after can be used as currency: seashells, cigarettes, post stamps, pokémon trading cards...
Also: Shovels, pickaxes and golden sword added to the lore thread. Feel free to critizise and spellcheck since it's stuff I just made up.

I read about it in a fellow student's project in apocalyptic society, and he said condoms, of all things, would be like gold to civilization. I'd understand that. Though it would be a tad silly.

I agree that condoms as currency is rather silly, but it's a step in the right direction.
Tabacco or cigarettes would be rare and worth something. So would Booze.
But I would say that antibiotics would be worth a lot in a post-apocalyptic world. They couldn't be mass produced because one needs a properly equipped and powered lab to do so. And they wouldn't need to be back by anything of value like current currencies.
Using money as currency strikes me as odd. With most of humanity extinct, a huge excess of money exists which leads to inflation, effectivly turning banknotes into colorful toilet paper.
The currency doesn't even need to be useful, Just like money in real life serves no real purpose. That's why Fallout has bottle caps. They're rare and you can carry around a lot of them.
I'd say we go with stamps. It fits the era, they are relativley counterfeiting proof, they have different values imprinted and they could be found in safes. However we need to wait for the snapshot to see if they are craftable or something.
It wouldn't be the inflation that kills paper money it will be that gold backing it is useless and inaccessible.
Currency only works because it is backed by something of value. In Fallout it was backed by NCR and it's water supply atleast in the first games.
If we go the route of stamps, then there has to be some sort of government or large settlement in the lore that can back the stamps with something of value or else they will be the same as paper money in a post-apocalyptic world.
That's why I suggested stamps since they are actually useless. They are small and therfore lightweight, hard to find, easy to lose, and susceptible to destruction which keeps them rare and prevents inflation. Without printing plates and a punching machine they are hard to fake. An they show happy, colorful motives from a better time .
I disagree with your statement that money has to be backed by anything valuable. Value is relative. Gold isn't really that useful, except perhaps for fake teeth and minor appliances in electronics, however it's considered valuable because it's rare and everyone wants it.
I never played FO 1&2 so I'll have to rely on the wiki:
The NCR isn't founded yet during the events of FO 1 but caps are used as currency.
In FO 2 the NCR uses gold backed $ as currency.
The events of FO 3 and FO:NV take place outside of the NCR and caps are used as main currency ($ appear, but only as trading good and lower value than caps).
Ergo: Caps are a rare, hard to fake but useless currency
There are also real world examples : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowry https://en.wikipedia...wiki/Rai_stones
Cowries and Rai stones weren't backed by anything and are absolutley useless. They were rare and people wanted them, that defined their value.
Or think of paintings drawn by Picasso. Butt-ugly and good for nothing but collecting dust in an bank vault, still people think they're valuable.
I havent played the Fallout games in forever, so I was mainly basing that info off of conversations with a friend who likes the Fallout world and occassionally frequents their forums.
I still say currency has to be backed by something. Look at it this way, would you trade stamps in a post-apocalyptic world. I wouldn't, they are exactly as you said useless junk. Unless some settlement states stamps are currency and are backing them with their supply of something.
About Picasso, there are people who find his work interesting and perhaps beautiful.
Im pretty sure that you can reverse engineer a custom painterly pack. Im pretty sure it enables custom biome shading per type of tree. you can find the biome shader textures in the misc folder.
heres an old chart that might help with deciphering the biome shading.
For the currency I suppose we could use washers or some kind of small mechanical parts or possibly something the testificates would only use. perhaps some kind of anti-mutagen formula because as far as i know it would be useless to the player gameplay wise as the player isint suceptable to mutations, But we'll have to see if it can be used in a crafting recipe.
With the snapshot, the coins are in the items.png but not in the game.
Instead emeralds are used as currency. So no crafting just mine an ore. That throws out quite a few of the ideas.
This is a map that was originally created by CoolDownPills. I loved the structure and have altered a few things. This map combines both his original "adventure" map and the Nuclear Apocalypse Challenge. Here I combine the two to give all of you a new challenge! Now there are a few rules that you must follow in order to keep this a decent challenge. All of which is COMPLETELY based on the Last Days TP... Link to the page HERE: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1247060-last-days-tp-survival-map-hive-2044-post-apocalyptic-challenge/
Here is a list of things we need to bother with:
1) Cocoa plants
2) Emeralds and Emerald ore
3) Trading gui
4) Enderchest
5) Super golden apple
6) Pyramids
1) Sounds good. Are we chaning the vines as well?
2) I rather go with tech from downed satellites.
3) Here ye go
4) Portals! is all I have to say.
5) uses same texture as previous golden apple. Let the lore writers deal with it.
1. Yes I think we should change them into lichen (correct word ?). The problem of their color remains though, unless someone figures the biome-foilage-color-stuff out. I've got way too much stuff to do atm to deal with everything.
2. The satellite tech was only meant as example. We could also use experimental babelfish (in fishtanks, that would be a cool decorative element) that escaped into the wild after the event, or moon rock samples, or edible termites (HIVE survivor is too grossed out to actually eat them).
Or we go with the sattelite.
3. Thanks. Does someone feel like doing a gui?
4. Thanks for the texture. A "portal" reference would really be funny. After all we already know that the cake is a pie. Perhaps the chest lid can be left untextured and the edge of the box animated to change between blue and orange. Does anyone want to try?
5. It uses the exact same texture? One less problem. However I wonder how people will be able to differentiate between the apples...
6. Like I feared: Way too many ventilators. The sandstone glyphs need to be swapped
Or we need complete new textures, but I think our priority should be the other new textures.
5. Different coloured text for the apples.
6. Do we need to think of new textures for the wool?
Also missed a new gui. It is a replacement for the allitems.png GUI
I heard somewhere that the red coins are going to be added in as rubies.

EDIT: Also here is enderchest texture

Just ask them :]
im making this because ALL the fallout type maps suck.....js
AND im thinking about explaining all the lore and story line on this map
Just ask them :]

but the red coin is still in the items.png so either it's still there because it's a snapshot or there are furthur plans for it.
