Would it be possible to create a texture pack for Minecraft 1.2 that creates cosmetic versions of the standard blocks by using the extra 4-bit datalayer? I.E., rather than just having one wood block or one stone block, there would be 16 texture variants of each of the blocks.
It would be ideal if this could be implemented so that a client without the texture pack sees only the default variants of each block, while a client with the texture pack sees the additional variants. That way it would look good to both players.
I know very little about texture packs or writing mods, but does this seem even remotely feasible? Does anyone have any insight?
