Thanks for bringing this pack back up! I do have to agree with everyone that sounds would be amazing for this pack, even if it just involves converting them to pseudo-8-bit. However, a couple cool NES based sounds would be cool such as:
Coin-pick-up sound from Super Mario Bros. for picking up items (good replacement for popping noise)
Throwing fireball sound (SMB) (replace arrow shoot)
Bowser noises (for Enderdragon)
Replace 16-bit fonts with true 8-bit fonts
Breaking noises from SMB (you can tell I like that game at this point)
Link's Hurt noise (Legend of Zelda)
Link's bomb (LoZ)
I hope this helps. Thanks for coming back, we all appreciate it.

Soooooooo... Now what?
EDIT: I am working on making a new NES 8-bit resource pack as a temporary fix until he gets back. It will not be custom textures, per se, but conversions of textures to the NES color palette. It will only be the textures, however, as I have no knowledge of converting music/sounds to the NES style. When I'm done, I'll see if he is going to continue working on the RetroNES pack. If not, you'll have one soon enough. It will be for 1.7.
Not sure if this is true or not, but I read on his Planet Minecraft page that he said that he stopped working on it and someone else decided to pick it back up. I did find this person's page eventually, but I didn't like some of the changes he made to it... So, I decided to give a crack at it. I really like this texture pack and I haven't seen an update to it since the release for 1.5.2. I did change a few things about it for my own personal tastes (since resource packs are awesome that way) and I had a wild hair one day and decided to update it for myself.
I tried to stick to the orignal as much as possible, despite that of some of the colors of the blocks don't stick to the NES palette.... Anyways, pictures:
Stained glass and harden clay (The stained glass uses the same color as the wool. And the harden clay is a slightly darker version of the wool colors. I also tried to make the harden clay look like the wool block texture.)
A face for the Dropper. (It's on the right side of the Dispenser.)
Vertical placements for the Dispenser and Dropper blocks.
Coal block and Podzol. (The Coal block is a recolor of the Lapis block. And I used the mycelium texture for the podzol and recolored it.)
Dark Oak and Acacia logs, along with their plank versions. (I used three colors of their vanilla versions to make these and colored them according to the Oak log and plank in its current texture pack.)
Red Sand, Packed Ice and the Hopper. (The red sand is a recolored version of the sand block. The packed ice is the solid and less transparent version of the ice block. And the hopper texture was ripped from the cauldron texture.)
The only block I haven't textured was the Hay Bail block. I also haven't textured the new flowers or the tops of the thin stained glass. Also, some items, as well as the horse, haven't been textured either. But, a majority of them are still their old textures when I tried converting this to 1.6 when resource packs were introduced. The only thing I had to do was rename some of them inorder for them to show up in the texture pack. The most frustrating part I had was with the stained glass, since it took me a while to figure out how to use the transparency function in paint.NET. But, even then, it was still a rather tedious to recolor every glass block. Same for the stained harden clay.
One thing to note, though, I had an older version of this texture pack and fixed the glowstone animation since for some reason it didn't look right in the 1.5.2 release... As for the other animated blocks, the animations run like they should without the need to run MCpatcher. However, I did remove the custom mob in this current version that I have since I never really had the need to use MCpatcher and I always had Custom Mobs checked off on Optifine. But, I still have the original folders of them.
As for a download... Well, since I did this for my own personal use, I don't have permission to release it since all of these textures aren't mine. And I'm not sure if I will get around to finishing the rest of the blocks and items. I'm not particually good at texturing my own items or even custom textures. And seeing most of the blocks I did make are recolors, you can see why.
I'm sure you could release the textures you made as a separate download and it wouldn't be a problem. Especially considering the status of this pack is up in the air.

I thought about doing that, actually. Pretty much, just zip up the textures I did into one file and you guys could just throw them into the current resource pack. But I'm not sure if it's against forum rules even to just do that. I also tried to get in contract with befarrar, but it shows he hasn't been here since July of last year... Perhaps I could possibly ask a staff member it if would be alright if I could just release the separate textures that I did for those who still want to use this pack.
And speaking of which, I've been in the process of trying to make it 1.8 ready. I still haven't textured most of the stuff because I've been pretty busy with work and sleeping all day because of a crazy night shift. I did take a crack at retexturing the hay bale block, but it keeps coming out to look really bad. I'm not sure how to actually make it look good without it looking like it belongs in a "simple craft" texture pack... I'll keep fiddling around with it and possibly post a picture in the future when I'm not so busy.
Hey, guys, sorry about the lack of updates. Between working and moving and computer problems, I haven't gotten around to work on it much. But, I haven't forgotten about this project. Though, I do have some bad news...
My harddrive that I had all my work saved on it was lost. Meaning, that every texture that I had made for it is gone and I am forced to start over again. I'm still pretty upset about it because I didn't make a back of up it anywhere else. However, I did manage to recover some of the textures that were previously made, so I still have some of the work I have made. Still, a majority of it is still gone... I will try to pick this back up and at least get something out for you guys before 1.8 is released, seeing that Mojang has added more blocks. So, yeah.
In other news, I still haven't gotten a hold of befarrar about releasing his work along with the newly textured blocks. Though, chances are, I may just have a separate download of the new blocks for 1.7 and possibly 1.8. And, I have also decided that I may, or, may not retexture the new mobs and flowers. Mainly, the blocks are going to be retextured... But, whenever I feel like it, I may end up making new textures for items, mobs, and the flowers. Just right now, I want to get the blocks out of the way.
1: Textures
2: Textures and Sound
[My suggestion: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/785404-161-retro-resource-pack-bring-back-the-old-sounds/ (This are only the old Minecraft Sound) - remembering the old Minecraft day's :/ - or you make / find real RetroNES sounds ;P]
If you do that, you NEED to make one of the music discs the Moon theme from Duck Tales.
Oh, and be sure to have it as an optional thing, like the above poster said.
Coin-pick-up sound from Super Mario Bros. for picking up items (good replacement for popping noise)
Throwing fireball sound (SMB) (replace arrow shoot)
Bowser noises (for Enderdragon)

I really hope you finish your work on bringing this to 1.8.
I miss this pack, and from what I've seen, you're doing a pretty good job with it.

Curse Premiumlolcats are still funny
They actually supported 64 colors, but only 54 were used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_game_console_palettes#Famicom.2FNES
