Here is Literal Minded, a texture pack that is equal parts crazy idea, funny experiment, challenge pack, and silly joke. It says what it means, and it means what it says.

Installation:
1. Download and install MCPatcher.
2. Download LiteralMinded_64x_v1_0_0.zip.
3. Place the zip file into your minecraft texture packs folder. DO NOT UNZIP THE FILE.
4. Choose and enjoy!
EDIT: Tested in 1.1 and still works just as well (and badly) as before.
Notes:
1. Some words were simply (frustratingly) impossible to get right. Most have to do with the way Minecraft uses its images. Many words on the bottom sides of blocks are printed backwards, but this cannot be fixed because there is only one image for the whole block, and it is inexplicably turned the wrong way on some block faces. Some blocks read correctly only if you are standing in the right place. Water and lava are sometimes correct and sometimes not. The sun and moon can only read correctly either rising or setting, not both (chose rising as more logical). Many such hidden surprises were fixed by trial and error, but at some point exasperation set in. Perhaps others can do better after this start.
2. The only reason the texture pack had to be 64x64 pixels was to have enough room to use text fonts in Gimp. Building letters pixel by pixel was tried, but it was abandoned due to it taking forever. Others may have more patience to build a smaller TP.
3. Because of the (expletive) hard coding of some coloring, leaves, grass and redstone could not be entirely drained of color. Likewise with rain-bounce, flames, water bubbles, how the water looks underwater, portals, how SOME water looks sometimes (green?), lily pads, and so on. Basically it's mostly gray but there are bits of color here and there everywhere you go. Those parts stick out, breaking the "you have to read it to see it" rule. :-( Little tip to Minecraft folks: after you build in customization, DON'T OVERRIDE IT!
4. XCF (Gimp) files are included for many of the important files (including terrain.png) in case people want to improve on this attempt. Got lazy in the mobs and stopped saving them there.
5. Since this was just a fun experiment, permission is given to adapt, include, steal, whatever. No delusions of ownership: it is just words, after all. Another idea is to keep the same "read it to see it" rule but make it even harder by making each block name a riddle, something you have to figure out, like diamond block is "shiny" or something.
6. No ITEMS were changed, only blocks and mobs and some environment/misc things. Could not figure out a way to put text on the tiny items and have it show up readable. But also the number of items was overwhelming after all the blocks and it was time to move on.
7. Did not do enderdragon. Silverfish came out badly, as did zombie pigmen (half of face image comes from elsewhere?). Patience ran out.
8. Could not get a screenshot of it, but if you make a TNT explosion, instead of bubbles it throws up the letters in the word "explosion." Goes very fast so you might miss it if you are not looking for it. Or if you are trying to make a screenshot of it.
9. There is only one thing among all the blocks that has no name on it but is simply gray. It is a joke. Look for it. Hint: it is attached to something. There are other jokes too. The boat has one. Do not ask for a count of jokes; it will be different for each person.
10. Thanks to Kab's Texture Pack Showcase for the excellent testing/demo map. Thanks be to the Gimp. Thanks to all the people who put up info and help. Everything is useful in its own way.
(EDIT) 11. Similar texture packs to explore: (1) Devremix. (To add to this list mention any others in comments to this topic.)
Okay, when I saw the first screenshot my initial thought was "oh please, not another one like this." Then I saw the rain and I started laughing. And I kept laughing through the rest of the screenshots. Well-done.

What other ones have you seen like this? Would like to see them!

I have no idea where they are now. It's the ones where they've been bucket-filled and something scribbled on the texture. For some reason I've seen a couple in the past few days and so at first glance I thought this was another one.
You can bypass the hard coding by making the blocks white.
Just tried using pure white for the leaves and grass. They got a bit lighter but were still colored green (or purple in the swamp biome). Happy to be taught how to do this better. :smile.gif:
Not going to add mod support. Happy to have someone else take over the project and do that. Don't mean to be rude, just don't have more time to give to it.
lol This texture pack is win. Kinda reminds me of the one in my signature abit though :3
Nice job.
Added link to Devremix in the first post. Happy to add any other similar packs to the list if people mention them. Somebody should build a periodic table of MC texture packs (and another one of mods). :happy.gif:

Fooled me good, you did. :wink.gif:
good pack
Net_Bastard's Epic Low-res! As much awesomeness that you can cram into a 5x5 texture pack, and then some!

18 yesterday. First day. No idea if that is a lot or a little. Don't mind either way. :smile.gif: Thanks!

I'm gonna have to patch just to use this! So weird...
Had no idea anybody would do that. Interested to hear how it comes out! Have found it equally insightful, relaxing and frustrating to use so far.
You found one of the jokes. :smile.gif:
