Here is another simple idea. Swap the texture for sand and sandstone (or dirt and gravel) when someone is underground. This will make them deathly afraid to touch anything because of the chance of a possible update to the block.
It only works if they are underground, though. So it'd be best to have it as another save.
You can also switch the gold and iron items since they look similar, especially since it'll already look like they got it from cobblestone.
