HD Textures? Why are "HD" Textures considered 32x and above? Shouldn't it be 720x and above? That's HD

In my first question I stated HD textures are 720x and above, but regular texture packs are x16, x32, x64, x128 and so on. So my question is, can you have textures of different resolutions? Say 20x, or 720x for HD? Does it have to be in multiples of 2?

Can texture packs REALLY Be less then 16x resolution? Can they be 8x? (Not just look like it) so the terrain.png has dimensions of 128x128, not 256x256

If the answer to Question #3 is no, and the resolutions can only be multiples of 2, is there a limit to the size? If in the future, new CPU's and GPU's are created, can there be MUCH higher resolution textures? Like 1024x or 2024x?
1. They are HD because they are bigger then the default ones.
2. They can't be random, 2 times bigger.
3. I don't think they can be smaller, it didn't work when I tryed once.
4. I think that max resolution it 256x256. You need a very OP pc if you want to run those without lag. Minecraft is endless and that's why textures can't be bigger - it would kill your pc.
Sooo much misinformation in this thread.
1) They are called "HD" because they are of a Higher Definition (hence the High Definition tag), than the default textures.
2) You can make texture packs that are off-resolution, though if you use programs like MCPatcher, it results in the pixels being different sizes.
3) Yes, there are many texture packs that are smaller than 16x.
4) It has been tested that the highest quality texture pack that minecraft can handle is around 720x. It's not a problem with the GPU or CPU or anything, it's just that after that point, it's the game that cannot handle it. And even at that point, it turns into a very laggy slideshow.
The MCPatcher only supports up to 128x, and I do not know what resolution Optifine supports up to.
