The texture base is a great idea! While you're working on that I'll focus on finishing up the texture-to-model mapping in hopes that it will help in applying variation to the right spots.
Side note: I had created a superflat word in order to test out horse texture mapping and was surprised by these:
Forgotten I had changed hues to give them a bit more randomness. Textures are below if there's interest in adding them to CTM
Yea, im building a random mob zip to toss it mod support because its not in the default pack, ill be sure to add this

My imagination has run free for so long, that I am afraid when it returns it will not recognize me, and eat me! -- Serrinatta
Ok, I'm trying to test this in game, but it doesn't seem to be working. I am temporarily replacing my black horse texture with my half-done one, but either I've got the files in the wrong locations, or I've named it wrong. Does anyone know the file-path to where it needs to be? And what it needs to be named?

File should be named "horse_black.png" and is located in the /assets/minecraft/textures/entity/horse/ folder. At least that's where mine sits and works.
I found that I had to convert all my files to the new size at once - including the markings so that I could see a correctly rendered horse texture. That and I had to save it at 96 dpi instead of 72. Photoshop 'save for web' feature only handles 72 dpi.
I'm trying to tackle the skeleton horse... having lots of fun with that O.o

Ok, that explains a bit then. I didn't resize any of the others, and if that's true about Photoshop's saving, then I'll take that into account too! Thank you!!

The eye actually scares me a little bit, like it's peering into my soul... Though it could just be the contrast between the muzzle and the rest of the face.
Update (Sorry, no pic):
So far I've tried a few different eyes, and none of them look all that great (one looks like the horse has too much mascara! ) But, hey, the guy who invented the ligh bulb also invented about 300 ways not to make a light bulb. So I'm just gunna keep trying.
Also, does anyone know what version of Minecraft that's the last one to use the "texturepacks" folder versus the first one to use "resourcepacks" folder? it gets confusing when I try to add it to the pack and add it to the wrong version

And yes, I know the muzzle is a little over-done with darkening it (and miss-aligned). I'll get that fixed next. Please note the other two horses in pens as that shows you the same eye from other angles and from further away.

That's looking much better! There's no big cartoony eye giving me a staring contest, its more natural!
I like the revised eye - more natural, though I feel like the white area of the eye should be *slightly* lighter...if that's possible without reverting to cartoony

The rest of the texture is looking great as well - have you thought about adding a bit more shading around where the legs attach to the torso?
I could try it, but since the legs actually move where they're overlaid with the torso, it might be better to put the shading on the legs themselves instead of the torso, or the shading won't move with the walking animation. (If I make sense? @[email protected])

It does actually... trying to picture how that might work in my head and it's not translating. Probably because I've got horse skeleton texture on the brain. I've been working on the skull first and it's coming along. Hoping to have some time over the holiday to work on it more so I have something to show
I have NO problems with this pack, and don't want it to sound like I do, but I was just downloading it (not for the first time) and noticed that furnaces and cobble stone look like, with some tweaking, they could tile together which I thought would be cool. Just something to think about, though.

They could indeed, but if you did that then furnaces would just disappear into walls or floors because they wouldn't really stand out. It might be cool to have a alt texture for this in case someone wants precisely this look, but otherwise I think its better as is.

Should I blur the eye a little so it doesn't look as pixelated? Or leave it as is?
Reply: It looks pretty good, but yea the eyes need some adjustment!
What password? There's a bunch of download links in the OP for various versions of Minecraft. No password required.

I found the other one looked too similar to the regular oak sapling.

Just added a border around the boxes for the crafting table and the crafted item.
