Hello, all. I am in the interesting position here of hardly ever even reading or navigating the forums, yet wishing to enlist the aid of people here with a project a friend and I are working on. As such, all are encouraged to take whatever I say with a grain of salt, and I'm sorry if I do anything stupid.
Alright. So, I've been working on putting together a texture pack, and I want to change the font. I've got the modified default.png, and I've dumped it into my 'font' folder. The rest of the texture pack works just fine (terrain, items, etc.), but the text shows up with the default, ordinary font. The dimensions of my default.png are identical to the original, and all the filenames are correct, to the capitalization; I've checked and rechecked. Not really knowing how all this works, I even put the original font.txt file into my pack, with no effect.
So, what silly mistake am I making? Do I need a patcher to run altered fonts, or is there something else I'm not thinking of? And if someone can explain, for the fellow who knows very little about coding and such, roughly how fonts work, that might also be helpful.

Alright, I've gotten my answer; a guy I talked to said that yes, I needed to use the patcher to use a custom font. I feel just a tiny bit silly, but that's the way it goes.
Now that I've humiliated myself for all who might have been viewing the board, I leave it up to whatever mods or admins exist here to decide to leave this up in the vain hope that others might learn from my slapping myself in the face, or to take it down so that it isn't taking up space.
