Here is my texture pack I worked on for a few weeks (not continuously, of course).
I tried to replace as much as I could, but mobs and some other graphics are still unchanged.
Hope, you enjoy it anyway!
I put in some "special" things, which possibly make you smile.
Update for 1.2.2/1.2.3:
- water more transparent
- iron door now with peephole
- added jungle tree, redstone lamp, bottle o' enchanting, enderdragon egg (forgot that), new stone and sandstones
- bugfixes (pixels and item positioning)
Update/Fix 03/18/2012:
- jungle tree sapling (completely forgot that)
- changed dyes
- changed plant stems (melon and pumpkin)
-- still no mob change, sorry guys... creeper as goomba doesn't look as good as thought...
Update for 1.2.5:
- changed wooden planks and added new types
- changed sandstone (and I don't know what that is under the creeper face)
Update for 1.3.1:
- added new inventories
- added emerald, tripwire, cocoa beans, book and quill, enderchest

Information
As mentioned my pack is just Super Mario inspired, so I improvised a lot, because in the very first game there aren't so much graphics to work with... but I tried my best to make it "work" together. And I'm aware of already existing packs like this, but I didn't like them, that's why I made my own.
I know there are some bad looking textures and bugs (e.g. the overlapping graphics on the chests), but I guess I'm not the only one with such problems.
If you spot mistakes that can easily be fixed (like floating pixels on textures), let me know and I'll update the pack... I tested a lot, but nobody can spot every tiny mistake.
Also, if you have any suggestions to improve the pack, feel free to post it! But things like "make the animals look like..." aren't necessary, because I already had these thoughts and you probably will see some of my ideas while playing. Changing mobs is a bit confusing and making them look like characters of the mario game isn't so easy.
BTW Any similarities with other packs like this are coincidences, because you can't avoid having the same idea (e.g. when a graphic fits perfectly because of it's dimensions or it's nature, game stone as mc stone).
You're not allowed to upload my pack anywhere else without my permission!
If you want to use it somewhere credit me and link to this thread.
First of all you'll need to download and run MCPatcher (if you haven't already) to make the pack work with Minecraft.
I recommend also using OptiFine HD with any texture pack (more settings/features).
Put the downloaded zip-file inside the texturepacks folder of your Minecraft installation.
Windows: press window+R and type %appdata%/.minecraft/texturepacks/
Mac: navigate to user/library/application support/minecraft./texturepacks/
Alternatively click on the button inside of Minecraft below the texture pack selection menu (after the zip-file is inside that folder, you have to select the pack in the menu).
I know the orange is a bit "extreme", but after some time you get used to it and on my screen it's not painful at all.
My setting is a bit brighter, because I don't like walking through the dark in games.
Two animals are mario themed... try it and find out which ;P
Like I said changing the mobs is kinda hard (at least for me), but I guess if someone mods a few animals to mario characters, changed mob textures might make more sense in my pack.
made some updates and fixes...
would be nice if you leave me messages if you spot bugs I don't notice by myself!
I tried to change the wolf, but it turned out terrible... I like the way the mobs look, but I'd like to "clean" them (no pixels)... everytime I try I fail...
uhm... it was hard enough to do it with the older ones ;P
and these were 8 or 16 px... so kinda perfect for texturing in minecraft blocks... but thanks ;P
made tiny changes... I forgot the jungle tree sapling... I was wondering why there was a flame floating around in the jungle o_O then I planted it... looked cool, but nothing happened...
took me a while to figure out what it is -_-'
I also changed the plant stems to look more "wild" and made it connecting with melon and pumpkin...
changed "rose red", "cactus green" and "dandellion yellow" to dyes... (don't even know what I was thinking there)
