You might want to reduce the contrast there, 42and19!As a pixel artist, I think this contest is awesome! Of course, a global palette of 32 or perhaps 64 shades would make more sense than 5 per block, but I guess I'll enter if I can come up with something.

So Lilyo got me into trying this. This is what I have done so far, not too sure about the bricks and stone bricks though... Might try some different styles. I love the dirt personally.

The side grass block is listed as one of the exceptions. So yes, you can have five colors for the grass fringe and five for the dirt. ^^

For the wood top, can I use 5 from the wood side texture, and 5 for the inside? I am currently using 6, mix between my planks and wood.
Strdr, I don't believe that the wood top is an exception, but it should be. It seems fair to have a bit different palette for the Wood Side and Top textures.

Also, why not just scrap the 24 hour limit? It's just annoying to have to keep taking time on everything you make, and if the stop date is on Sunday you would probably not even work more than 24 hours on it. It makes me stressed too. :c

I'm torn about the stone. It's different and unique but unique isn't always better. Maybe if I touch it up and make it more moss like...
